From Rothenburg to Brugges 3 nights- Rhine, Mosel, Trier?

We have 3 nights between stays in Rothenburg and Brugges (driving) and are deciding how to split up the time between the Rhine and/or Mosel Rivers and a stop in Trier. Hoping to see Burg Eltz, Marksburg, and Rheinfelz castles...any suggestions on itinerary, stops, hotels would be greatly appreciated. We have much longer stops in the remaining itinerary so while not optimal could move every night. Thanks.

Since you have outlined a Rick Steves [Seattle ... ] itinerary, I wonder if you've looked around his Germany forum. There's a lot of material on the area you asked about

https:/…germany

I don't consider Trier to be right-next-to-Bruges. And I'd hate to miss the wonderful places in Belgium in between, in a mad rush to a single, romantic, medieval town with canals.

To answer your question, we took Rick's 1 1/2 hour "scenic rhine" cruise, downstream, as part of a local driving day. Because we were at a flower show in Koblenz, it's not as helpful to you. A car and luggage make the Rhine boatride a more complex planning issue. Will your luggage be out of sight while you are, for example, inside Burg Eltz?

We drove from a few days in Koblenz to a few days at (very expensive) Weinromantik Hotel Richtershof, Mulheim. Trier was one of our driving day-trips from there. One sunshine day there was fine. That was a Mulheim night, despite the fact that our final destination was BRU airport after a night in nearby Leuven. We stayed along that way in Lanaken, BE, for medival towns and the Bokrijk Open-Air museum. Because of work and friend visits, we had started at BRU and rented the car there, so we also avoided the one-way rental fee.
