Actually a no-brainer because Düsseldorf is in no way a rival for Dresden. Dresden has impressed me a lot, Düsseldorf has not impressed me at all However, for just two days (or two nights, i.e. one full day?) from Paris... transfer from Paris to Dresden will consume a full day unless you find a flight, and another full day back. Check the distance.

When traveling by train only Düsseldorf is for a 2 days trip realistic.

You can combine Düsseldorf with Cologne. The trains pass anyway along Cologne Cathedral, Germany's most visited sight, by a few meters.

While I also think that Dresden is the more attractive destination it is by train simply too far for a 2 days trip. And there are also no direct flights from Paris to Dresden.

It used to be a no-brainer: Dresden. But in the last 5+ years, Duesseldorf has become much more attractive. The main improvements in Duesseldorf are the Media Harbor - great new buildings and some places to eat - and the extension of the Koenigsallee - down by the Steigenberger Hotel. The old town remains nice and the art museums are pretty good. Cologne is a quick trip and Bonn, a bit farther, has a good museum of contemporary German life. So if Dresden is too far, you will be happy with Duesseldorf.
