One Way Car Hire to Italy

Hi. We are looking to rent a car oneway from Berlin to Italy, as this will maximise our time in Europe. I was wondering if anybody knows of any discount car rental companies, especially to reduce the one way fee.

I know alot of people will say forget it and take the train, but you never get a second chance to see the country without a timetable to keep!

I have contacted the major companies, Europcar, Avis, Hertz and the big internet based ones, DriveEurope, HolidayAuto's, but thought someone might have some inside information or know of special coupon rates to use?

Thanks all and happy travels!

The problem starts with that some rental companies do even not allow you to drive with some of their rental cars (like Audis, BMWs, Mercedes) into Italy at all.

And there is the international drop off fee. The car has to be driven back to Germany by an employee. Thus expect several hundred Euro for this.

Don't think that any budget car rental company will do this. Some of them even only allow to return the car at the branch you rented it.

The German and Italian border are just some 45 km (linear distance) apart. Rent a car in Germany and return it there. Travel by train through Austria (saves you also the autobahn sticker (vignette) there) and rent again a car in Italy for Italy.

Totally agree, maybe drop off car in Garmisch, take the train Garmisch-Mittenwald-Innsbruck-Bozen(Bolzano). First it will save you lots of money, second you'll get a super scenic train ride which will not cost too much.
