Best tours for Neuschwanstein Castle?

My husband and I will want to do a day trip to Neuschwanstein Castle from Munich. Can anyone recommend the best tour companies to use (or alternatively, if you think those companies aren't worth it and it's best to go it alone?)?

I understand that if we were to do it alone, we would do a train to Fussen and a bus to Hohenschwangau, where we could buy tickets for the regular tour or pick them up if we reserved in advance (do you have to wait in a regular line to pick pre-reserved ones up?). Then there's a good walk up to the castle. Does anyone know how long the tour (official one if someone is just buying a ticket themselves) lasts?

Thank you!

I should add that that I have read that it may not be worth the hassle to actually go inside the castle as the most amazing part is the exterior. would others agree?

You can go there easily by yourself. Using a Bayern Ticket this is a lot cheaper than the tour buses (EUR 27 for 2 persons). Bayern Ticket covers all local public transport in Munich, the trains to Füssen and the buses to Hohenschwangau village. In case you travel on a weekday and want to use the 08:53 connection buy additionally single tickets to München-Pasing (EUR 2,60 pp). Departure from Pasing is at 09:00, i.e. you can use the Bayern Ticket from there on.

You can also visit Hohenschwangau Castle which many find from the interior more interesting. It is also possible to walk or take a bus (1 stop) to the Tegelbergbahn valley station. Where you have the Tegelberg cable car, a summer luge, some remains from Roman times, a beer garden etc.

And Füssen itself is a really nice town.

There is an own counter for reserved tickets. Thus you don't have to queue in the regular line. At this counter there are only short queues or none.

35 minutes. There are only the "official" tours. Even if you go with a tour company to Neuschwanstein Castle.

You'll see the same interior whether you take an organized tour or go on your own. Definitely reserve your tickets on line ahead of time, to avoid the long queues for same day tickets. Here's the link for the nearby town of Fuessen, well worth a visit while you are there. http://www.fuessen.de/en.html

Hi Earth3003,

Our family of three (with young child) made it to Neuschwanstein pretty easily from Munich using just public transport, so I am sure you will be able to do it too.

It's quite a length description so instead of pasting them here, you may read about our experiences here:

Hope our writeup will be useful for your upcoming trip! Enjoy! :)

thanks! By the way, for those interested, we did do the interior tour and found it beautiful. The wait in the ticket line at about 12:30 was 35-40 minutes (we started literally at the beginning of the line que, where it said "20 min wait"--haha). It went by fairly quickly though even though 40 minutes seems long,
