Rhine River Area or Black Forest?

We are flying into Frankfurt, then will be visiting Baden Baden for 2 days and Alsace for 3 days. We have 2 days lefts for either the Rhine River area or the Black Forest area and can't decide which would be best.

Our favorite things to do are wandering around small villages eating, drinking and shopping. We don't like museums or lots of driving. We also prefer hotels in the small villages so we can walk to dinner.

Any suggestions! Thank you.

I'd vote for the Rhine. You could stay in one village and then take either a train or boat to other little villages. The river and castles are very scenic.

You are already at the Black Forest ( www.schwarzwald-tourismus.info ) when you are at Baden-Baden.

Another option would be the Neckar River between Rottweil and Mannheim with its castles, terraced vineyards and pleasant small towns, one of which, Besigheim ( www.besigheim.de only in German) was voted Germany's most picturesque wine town, not bad for a place even many locals don't know about. Look at #4 of tripadvisor.com/…32318285 which I wrote about some of the highlights along this route, but traveling in the opposite direction, and for Baden-Wuerttemberg's oldest town from Roman times, Rottweil, their website is www.rottweil.de . Oh, and although all of these places are excellent, you'll see few foreign tourists so that you can have a "real" German experience.

Oh, you'll have to drive through the Black Forest after Baden-Baden to begin this route, which will take you back in the direction of Frankfurt.

Logistically, it makes sense to explore the Black Forest. However, nothing in the BF can compare to the castles on the Rhine. Go there instead.
