Sights within an hour's drive of Pforzheim?

We are staying with family just outside Pforzheim, and would like to drive through the black forest tomorrow afternoon (a half day trip). We are two fit adults, and two kids (4 years and 1 year old). I realize that the most of the "best" places to visit are too far south to see in half a day. What are our best options for a scenic drive and nice places to stop with kids in the northern part of the black forest?

Thanks for any and all thoughts.

Hi!

You can do a nice trip to Bad Wildbad, then to the ruins of the old monastry in Hirsau. And if you like, you can do a little stroll through the old streets of the picturesque town Calw

Bad Wildbad - belle epoque spa town, sort of a miniature Baden-Baden, including the funicular ride up Sommerberg: members.virtualtourist.com/m/f86bd/1c0b/ (the page was written two years ago when the funicular was under repair, it is back in operation now).

Maulbronn Abbey: kloster-maulbronn.de/en/maulbronn-monastery/

The Alb valley with Marxzell and the car museum: members.virtualtourist.com/m/f86bd/22ab88/

The Murg valley is even more scenic; you might enjoy the small old town of Gernsbach: members.virtualtourist.com/m/f86bd/efa0/

Between these locations you have plenty of wide forests for a walk.

Perhaps Bad Teinach/Zavelstein. Interesting (but small) castle ruins. If you like spas/swimming there is a nice one at "Bad Hotel" with indoor/outdoor pools and nice gardens.

I second Calw, home of Hermann Hesse.

Perhaps your children are too young, but you can visit at least two nearby old underground mines:

Neubulach- silver mine with also special tours ( http://www.bergwerk-neubulach.de/ )

Neuenbuerg- Besucherbergwerk "Frisch Glueck" an old iron mine ( http://www.frischglueck.de/ ).

The direct road (via Dobel, Bad Herrenalb and Gernsbach) from Pforzheim to Baden-Baden used to be for me the most "Black Foresty" road in the Black Forest. Unfortunately, hurricane force winds a number of years ago destroyed all of the pine trees of which now there are no trace, but it's still a nice drive. At Baden-Baden take Hwy 500, the Black Forest High Road up into the mountains. At Freudenstadt continue through Dornstetten to the lovely ridgeline town of Horb am Neckar ( www.horb.de ), and then through Nagold and Hermann Hesse's town of Calw ( www.calw.de -nearby monastery ruins) through the spa town of Bad Liebenzell with its water park and castle back to Pforzheim. That route will take you by some lovely scenery as well as some pleasant towns and some cultural sights. And note that these places are as good as places in the south.
