Villages near Freiburg

Hello,

My husband, myself and our 2 year old are traveling to the Black Forest region in September and were wondering if anyone had suggestions on nice villages to stay in and/or hotels/guest houses/etc in said villages/towns. We do not like the overly-touristy type towns and are not looking for night life. We would like to be close to hiking trails (we are avid hikers and will have our son in a backpack). We will have a car so the village does not need to be on a train line.

Thanks for your help.

Schluchsee is a lovely village with a lake, about 1 hour from Freiburg. Much less touristy than nearby Titisee and convenient to reach by train if you want to leave the car. We stayed at Hotel Flora and it was excellent - fantastic food. parkhotel-flora.de/englisch/hotel/hotel.html The parking lot is full of cars of people from France and Switzerland who come there to eat. Tons of hiking around, especially more away from the lake.

Schluchsee is also a good starting point for the "Schluchtensteig" hiking trail:

Another good hiking area is Todtnauberg on a plateau south of of the Feldberg:

Thus minus Titisee and Triberg.

Not really a criteria, as there are no places there without hiking trails.

Münstertal (Münster Valley) is really nice

muenstertal-staufen.de/Region-Orte/Muenstert…

That's close to the Belchen, the mountain with the best views in the Black Forest.

and with ideal sight conditions: the Alps seen from the Belchen

(they look indeed that close, albeit they are not that close at all)

An insider tip which is hardly known outside the region but matches any fairytale picture of the Black Forest: Simonswald. A long narrow valley with many of those typical farmhouses, as romantic as can be. You'll find lots of holiday apartments, farm stays and country inns.

In September the grapes will be ripening on the vine along the west edge of the Black Forest, a lovely sight. You might consider such an area: Sasbach-walden, Gengenbach, and Staufen im Breisgau heading from north to south are all top-rated places.

Sankt Maergen is in beautiful countryside, on several hiking and mountain bike trails and definitely not too touristy.

Thanks so much for all your replies. I will certainly look into all of this information. So far, I've done some research on Staufen and Genganbach. The region looks so lovely, we can't wait to see what it offers.

You might check out Lauterbach? I've been there many times over the past 15 years or so. Its's about 45 minutes northeast of Freiburg and next to the town of Schramberg. No foreign tourists ...barely a nightlife.....some small inns & guesthouses....located in a valley, it's a walking/hiking paradise.
