You'll find bars, restaurants etc. throughout the old town. Just drift.

The Greifenegg-Schlössle is a restaurant with biergarten, overviewing the old town. Walk to the "Schwabentor", cross the wooden bridge and take the elevator to the restaurant. Stop for tram No.1 is "Oberlinden"

Shops close at 6 pm.

We spent four nights in Freiburg last July and had a lovely time -- lots to see, just by walking around. We stayed at the Stadthotel Kopling, and although another traveler noted problems with service, we had not trouble. Breakfast was excellent with many selections and attentive service. From hotel, it is quite easy to to walk to Musterplatz and Augustinerplatz -- we had drinks and dinner one evening at Feierling Brewery, which was quite relaxing and very good.

Freiburg was one of the highlights of our trip.

I visited Freiburg 2 years ago and some friends took us to the top of the tallest Buidling in the center of the city. I'm sorry to say I don't remember the name of the building but I was told that it was known as the tallest building with a restaurant on the top in the entire place. The restaurant was very nice and it had 2 floors one just to launch around, have some appetizers and drinks and the other floor was for dancing. It was a beautiful location to spend time in the evening when it's dark outside and you get to see all the city lights on.

We just got back from Freiburg, Shops on Saturday close at 4:00

so I am afraid you won't have much time to do shopping. I love to shop in Freiburg (we have been there nearly every year in the last 10 years). We stay at the City Hotel in Weber st. which is right

close to the main pedestrian street Kaiser Joseph. You won't

find too many restaurants open after 20:00 so better prepare yourself to eat a bit earlier. If you like an authentic sauerkraut and sausages restaruant Martin's Brau here is what a tourist had to say:

Are you like me? - You have a hard time to decide where and what to eat and you prefer to look around to see what the restaurants have to offer. Well, then the Freiburger Markthalle is the right place for you! Under one roof, you have access to cuisines from all over the world; Chinese, Thai, Mexican, Italian, French, Indian, American, Turkish... Take your pick...or if you like German food, and beer for that matter, go directly to Martins Bräu, Freiburg's oldest guesthouse brewery! Opening hours: Monday - Friday 9.00h - 19.00h Saturday 9.00h - 16.00h

Address: Kaiser Joseph Strasse 233

Phone: + 49 (0)761/38700-0

Directions: In the middle of town, there are at least two entrances. Ask a friendly Freiburger for directions!

Sorry to see that Saturday it closes early.

Another restaurant is in the middle of the town near the cathedral its called Rappen. The "Rappen" is just one example for the restaurants all along the Muensterplatz - they all serve pretty tasty local food like "Kaes-Spaetzle", "Flammkuchen" in several varieties, "Badischer Wurstsalat" and many other things. This food is great and tasty from time to time says one guy who ate there. Its not a cheap restaurant, none of the restaurants in that area is cheap.

Sorry Betina,

but because of the bold statement "You won't

find too many restaurants open after 20:00 so better prepare yourself to eat a bit earlier." ,

i must take up the cudgels for Freiburg. There are dozens of restaurants with common opening hours in the old town. And numerous in all parts of the town. Only a few are dependent on the shops and shoppers in the pedestrian zone, so their opening hours are adjusted accordingly.

Also 30.000 students refuse to keep early hours...

No offence!

Hi Huwe,

You are right. But being a tourist is not being

a student who lives daily in Frieburg (I wish I was).

I would love it if you could give me some names and addresses of nice (not too expensive) restaurants in Freiburg so next time I come I won't have this problem of going to those tourist traps and

have some choice (even the hotels send you to the expensive restaurants as they get probably a commision).

Thanks.

Betina

Hi Betina,

i don't think, they get a commision, they probably just take the easy way out. Some of the following are not direct in the old town, but the part of town "Wiehre" e.g., is just across the river.

Greifenegg-Schloessle (see my above posting) old town

Kartoffelhaus (potato-house!) Basler Strasse 10 Wiehre

Omas Küche, Hildastrasse 66 Wiehre

Carmen, Nägeleseestr. 20 Wiehre

Schiller, Hildastrasse 2 Wiehre

Bankepeter, Schwarzwaldstr. 93

Paradies, Mathildenstr. 26

http://fr-loewen.de/de/index.php old town

Aquila, Sautierstr. 19

Have fun!
