Use www.bahn.com for connections and times. Click on the > to the left of your options to see the details. You can do this using a Baden-Wuerttemberg day train ticket, 21€ for the first person with an additional 4€ for each person afterwards up to a total of five on one ticket. Baden-Wuerttemberg day train tickets are valid on any means of public transportation within this state except the fast long-distance IC, EC and ICE trains. Therefore, on the website check "use local transportation" if using this ticket and only valid connections will show. These tickets are valid for a whole day from 9AM to 3AM the next day on weekdays, and from midnight to 3AM the next day on weekends and holidays.

Note that you should also query for Hechingen which is by the castle, as there are very few buses up to the castle a day, and you'll probably have to take a taxi at least one way. They won't cost that much as the distance isn't very far from Hechingen.

The website www.burg-hohenzollern.com has information on the castle and how to arrive there and you can click on burg-hohenzollern.com/driving-directions.html to see the various recommended connections by public transportation. Note also that if you are a family and show your Baden-Wuerttemberg day train ticket you will be given a discount for admission.

DB timetable

http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en

Start: Heidelberg Hbf

Destination: Burg Hohenzollern, Hechingen

Best deal would be a Baden-Württemberg Ticket. This day ticket covers all regional trains in Baden-Württemberg. But also the trams and buses in Heidelberg and the (few) buses up to Hohenzollern Castle. Baden-Württemberg Ticket is valid

Mo-Fr: from 9am till 3am next day

Sa,Su: from midnight till 3am next day

Select at the DB timetable as means of transport "only local transport" if you want to travel on a Baden-Württemberg Ticket.

.

Hohenzollern Castle is however not close to Heidelberg. The castles in the Neckar Valley are much closer

Neckarsteinach with its 4 castles

Burg Guttenberg

There are more between Heidelberg and Burg Guttenberg:

http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minneburg

http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burg_Hornberg

http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schloss_Horneck

With the exception of Burg Guttenberg all others are close to train stations. You can reach them on a VRN 24 hours ticket.

Neckarsteinach can be also reached from Heidelberg by boat.

My own comment: I think Hohenzollern is a beautiful place. However, it is rather a long trip from HD and I would also suggest you stay closer to HD. I do not think it is worth such a long trip unless you have very special interest or have other places to see in Swabia.
