Karlsruhe-Baden Airport hotel & Kollmarsreute train

I am going to the Freiburg area this July 2011. I have no idea what the transportation infrastructure is like here. I know when I flew into Hanh Airport I rented a car to see the area along the Rhine. I didn't even need my car until the day I returned to the airport. Even then I could have managed by train. So when I go on this next trip, I would like to NOT have to waste money on a car. But here is my problem. I am flying into Karlsruhe-Baden Airport. Is there a train that I can catch directly from the Airport itself or do I have to take a bus or taxi to a main station somewhere? Also, I will arrive at 9:30 pm. I have to get to Kollmarsreute. Will trains be running that late into the evening? If not is there a hotel right at the airport or one that has a shuttle bus to it?

What towns, villages and sites are NOT to be missed while staying a week in the area of Freiburg?

Thanks, Kathleen from Ireland

Public transportation information can be found at www.bahn.com . From the airport you will first have to take a bus to reach a train station.

Information on the Black Forest can be found at www.schwarzwald-tourismus.info .

I doubt that you'll be able to reach there by public transportation at that time of night, but you can certainly reach Emmendingen and then take a taxi the few kilometers to Kollmarsreute.

DB timetable

http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en

From: FKB Baden-Airpark

From: Baden-Baden

To: Kollmarsreute

There is a train connection from Baden-Baden dep 22:18 with a change of trains in Offenburg. Arrival in Kollmarsreute is at 23:26.

Problematic is the bus connections from the airport to the station. So far there are only late buses for the winter flight timetable in the schedule. Thus until March there is a bus at 22:00. Arrives however only at 22:16 at Baden-Baden station. And this is too tight. Using a taxi from Baden Airpark to the station it will be however no problem to make it on the 22:18 train. Will cost however approx. EUR 30.

Another option would be the Flightliner shuttle bus to Freiburg and from there by taxi.

(but note that this timetable is only valid till March)

.

Kollmarsreute is in the RVF local public transport network.

http://www.rvf.de/PDF/Liniennetzplan.pdf

24 hours ticket for the whole RVF network is EUR 10,60. An add-on ticket ("badisch24") for 24 hour covering the neighboring next 4 networks is EUR 9,90.

RegioElsassTicket is a 24 hours ticket covering the RVF and the buses to Colmar. EUR 11,40 for one person.
