Stuttgart to esslingen train

We're staying in Stuttgart for the Christmas market but would like to visit Esslingen for the day. What train do we catch to Esslingen, how much and do they run in the morning, say around 9:30am. For the return journey, are there trains returning from Esslingen to Stuttgart at around 7pm. We have never been to Germany before, do not speak a word but don't see that this should put us off trying to explore new towns. Please help.

It's just a short 15 Minute S-Bahn-ride from Stuttgart Central Station to Esslingen. Trains run every 15 minutes on weekdays, 30 minutes on weekends. Single fare is 3,70, but you can also buy a day ticket for the VVS network.

You can check connections till 13. Dec. 2014. Won't change much afterwards.

DB timetable

Start: Stuttgart Hbf

Destination: Esslingen(Neckar)

Travel time is 10-17 minutes. The regional trains stop less often than the S-Bahn trains.

VVS tariff applies. VVS tickets cover regional trains, S-Bahn trains, the Stadtbahn (trams) in Stuttgart and the buses in Stuttgart, Esslingen and elsewhere.

A good deal is the 3 days ticket for tourists. You will need the version for the (VVS) network.

This ticket gets you also to Ludwigsburg.

Information on the local VVS transportation network can be found on www.vvs.de which can be changed to English on that page. Unless things have changed recently, there are 2 S-bahns every hour (S-1 for Esslingen) and twice as many during morning and evening rush hours. You can also take regional trains for the same price but your departure point then will be from upstairs in the main train station and not in the deep basement which is used for the S-bahns.

I just had to reply - you will love Esslingen's CHristmas market. You probably know - it is a medieval market with wonderful food and crafts true to that era. Hand cranked Ferris wheel for children, street dancers all in character - it is a magical experience. IMO Stuttgart has the loveliest Christmas market as well. Go early in the day though.
