Suggestions on sights to see

We are taking a cruise from Barcelona to Venice and will arrive in Venice the morning of October 24. We will have 10 additional days to play. We have been to Germany previously but were up around Cologne. We would like to try to see some castles and other sights which would be within driving distance from Venice and then end up back in Venice when we fly out on Nov. 3. I am looking for suggestions of "must see" sights in southern Germany and even Austria. Thanks.

There's an open air museum (freilicht Museum) just outside Salzburg with a collection of really old farm housed from all over Austria. Memorable.

Lake Chiemsee, more or less between Salzburg and Munich at the foot of the Alps, is beautiful. There is a palace modeled after Versailles on one of the islands in the lake. You get there by taking a ferry from the town of Prien.

Hi,

I'd highly recommend taking a night or 2 on the drive from Venice to Germany via the Italian Dolomites. Figure on a route from Venice "north" to Cortina d'Ampezzo and then west through the Alta Badia, over the spectacular Gardena Pass, through Val Gardena to the A22 highway north to Innsbruck. From here most places mentioned in Germany are 2 hours away or less. The drive from Venice to say the Alta Badia (just west of Cortina) is about 3 or so hours. Magnificent scenery! The drive from Alta Badia to Innsbruck would be about the same. In addition to the picturesque villages and dramatic Dolomite scenery, you'll get to drive a couple of Dolomite Passes. Incredible experience.

Two places we have stayed and can recomend in the Dolomites are:

In La Villa, Alta Badia:

In St. Christina, Val Gardena:

Thank you to all for the suggestions. I will certainly look into all of them. We are quite excited to be going to Europe again and hope to see our German exchange student again as she is now studying in Barcelona. Tamera
