Driving From Munich To Frankfurt

In August we are driving from Munich to Frankfurt, with three nights in between. We are definitely visiting Dachau the morning we leave Munich then we are thinking of two different options.

Option1: From Dachau drive to Passau - Linz - Regensburg - Nuremburg - Rothenburg - Heidelburg - Frankfurt or

Option 2: From Dachau drive through Augsburg - Ulm - through the black forest - Baden Baden - Heidelburg - Frankfurt.

Any recommendations or improvements would be most welcome.

Option 1 will be a lot of driving with too little time to see the cities.

For option 2 I would head south after Ulm to Lake Constance, then drive to the Black Forrest, leaving Heidelberg for the last day as it is only an hour from Frankfurt. I don't find Ulm that special for a visit except for the Dom. The direct motorway from Ulm to the Black Forrest is usually a nightmare with some very long traffic jams, first between Ulm & Stuttgart then at the junction by Stuttgart then often again on A81. Taking the A8 is even worse at Pforzheim. By going via the lake you pretty much miss this

For option #2, do what I have written in #1 and #3 of tripadvisor.com/…38434059 in reverse beginning at Memmingen. Our favorite drive in Germany with good scenery, lots of things to see of various types, few tourists at the excellent attractions, and no autobahn stalls as you won't be using them. Unfortunately, you will miss the Schützenfest.

Another option: Leave Munich on the A-9, north. From Dachau you get to the A-9, using the A-99 Munich by pass Autobahn.

Leave the A-9 at exit 59 (Allersberg) and take the road to Roth, Windsbach and the Autobahn A-6. This is a very pleasant backroads trip, by-passinbg the Autobahn spaghetti junctions of Nuernberg. The fields with the telephone poles are where they grow the hops for the Bavarian beer.

Take the A-6 west to the intersection with the A-7, head north for 20km for the Rothenburg exit #106. Spend the night there. In the afternoon of the next day, take the road to Creglingen (visit the Herrgottskirche there), Weikersheim (palace) , Bad Mergentheim (spa) to Wuer burg. Spend a couple of nights there, visit the castle overlookig the city, the Resdenz Palace in the center of the city, and enjoy some of the wine restaurants in this university city. Drop off your car, and take the train from the Wzbg. main station to the Frankfurt airport. This avoids the very busy (with trucks) A-3.

Thank you for your suggestions. I had plan to avoid the motorways but as you say it may be wiser to go further south.

I'll take all your ideas into account and look at the route again.

If you do not use the motorways then you will spend too long driving between places to have time to see them. For the number of places you want to see you do not have that much time

That's true. It will be a bit of a balancing act as to whether we take the motorways or more minor roads. It'll probably end up a combination of the two. We have plenty of time to refine it.

Drive straight to Bamberg. Stay there . VisitNuremberg from there. When you leave visit Wurzburg en route to Frankfurt.

Ths is the best. Bamberg is th finest city inEurope, let aloneGermany.
