First visit to Bavaria

My wife and I are planning to visit Bavaria next year. We will fly to Munich, rent a car and explore. Does anyone have any information as to the best time of year to visit, the best areas to visit etc. Any suggestions will be most welcome.

Hi,

Two of my three trips to Bavaria were in late September/early October, and the weather that time of year was just perfect. Crisp autumn days, the leaves turning, and more sunshine than clouds. My last trip was in December for the Christmas season.

Keep in mind that Munich's Oktoberfest runs the two weeks preceding the first Sunday in October (20 Sept. - 5 Oct. 2014), and about 6.5 million people will descend on Munich for those two weeks. Also, 3 October is a German national holiday (to celebrate their reunification).

To me, some interesting places were:

Wieskirche - A small Rococo style church. (when you click on the link, music will play)

Berchtesgaden and Königssee

Rothenburg ob der Tauber

Prien Am Chiemsee

Augsburg

I would also recommend a night or two in Salzburg. (But if you drive into Austria, you MUST have a toll vignette attached to your car's windshield. You can purchase on valid for 10 days for 8.50 € at a gas station on the German side of the border. Drive without one and risk a several hundred euro fine to be paid on the spot if you're caught.)

Traveling in the shoulder season, I was able to get rooms on the fly in small guest houses or pensions without reservations. Most were quite modest and extremely clean, with an in-room shower and toilet. That allowed me to have a "make-it-up-as-I-go" holiday, allowing me to linger when I found something really interesting, or move on when what I saw wasn't what I expected.

Regardless of where you go, you'll have a great trip.

Zed

Very many thanks for your most detailed reply, lots of information for me to look through. We were thinking of going during June or July, but it would appear earlier or later has the better weather. Once again, thank you for your help. If you are ever going to visit Great Britain, contact me and if I can I'll answer any of your questions.

Jon.
