Safety & Winter/Night Driving (Munich to Ramsau)

We have a concert in Munich beginning at 4 pm in mid-to late December - right after the concert we would like to pick up our rental car and drive to Ramsau.

We are concerned about road conditions and light as we do not have any experience driving in Bavaria - here in Canada we drive in -25 celsius, freezing weather, windchill - we travel at night on the massive Trans-Canada highway, but in that weather, we try to avoid it when it is dark outside because of snow drift on the highways, and sheer black ice sometimes on the road.

What time will it get dark in mid-to-late December? It t sounds like there is no snow now, with temperatures just above zero (though that can change). Is it reasonable to try to drive from Munich city centre beginning at about 6 or 7 pm to try to get to Ramsau for about 9 pm? It will surely be dark by then.

Our other option is just to stay another night in Munich and go out in the morning but this will be more rushed with us having to get up much earlier, as we need to be in Ramsau for 11 am and not any later. What time would we have to start our drive from Munich if we leave in the morning on a Sunday or Monday?

Please reply if you have experience on the roads at this time of year.

Thank you everyone!

It's getting dark between 4 and 4.30 pm.

When you are used to driving Canadian winters you have nothing to fear in Germany.

Hi,

We just returned last weekend from our stay in Schonau am Konigssee, by Ramsau. It gets dark around 4:30pm. The drive is relatively easy highway mist of the way. We had a few days of snow, roads were cleared and it didn't effect our driving or trip at all. Munich to Ramsau bei Berchtesgaden should take maybe 2 hours at most. By the way, we've stayed in Ramsau bei Berchtesgaden a number of times and love it there.

Thank you Paul for your note! A great consolation.

Could you tell us out of interest where you stayed while in Munich and comment on the Bayerischer Hof, Mandarin Oriental, and Muenchen Palace if you happened to see them at all? Also, in terms of driving, did you pick up your car in Munich? If you had a choice, would you start off with the car in the city centre, or would you have preferred to start outside the city, perhaps in one of the smaller towns?

We stay in small Pensions, etc., we've only picked up at the airport. We've driven into Munich twice in the past few years. Parked near the main train station? A bit of a pain, but not terrible.

Any recommendations on where to find parking near the Residenz and Marienplatz (or in between so we can walk back and forth to each of these locations?)?

Thanks!

There is a big underground garage directly in front of the opera, right next to the Residenz and a short walk to the Marienplatz. During the day, the garage fills up quickly, the same is alos true before opera performances.

Okay - we will try to go to the garage but we will get there early if we can - many thanks for the recommendation!

Any other ideas just in case the garage is full?
