Munich's a great place to take kids. We really enjoyed the Nymphenburg - the grand palace of the Bavarian royal family. You can walk for miles through its grounds and stop at all the little outlying mini-palaces, fake temples, and Europe's first indoor swimming pool (just to look at). Besides the palace itself, you can also tour the porcelain museum (not to be missed!) and the botanical gardens.

Munich has fabulous art museums, if you can manage to drag the kids through those.

Germany has great swimming complexes in almost every town. An outstanding excursion you can make is to the Chiemsee (see = lake). First you take a boat out to the palace on Herrenchiemsee island. This 19th century palace is a close replica of Versailles on a smaller scale. The ferry takes you next to Frauenchiemsee island. It has a nunnery, which you can't tour, so you mainly just stroll around and enjoy the view here. Back on shore in the town of Prien is the Prienavera swimming complex. It has a waterslide, jets, fountains, a jet-powered circular river, and its best feature is the outdoor massage tub, which you swim into and look out at the lake across to the palace. In the evening they illuminate the palace - it's a terrific sight.

Something important you should know in any swimming complex:

Herren - the boys' locker room

Damen - the girls' locker room
