eagles nest

Hello. We are first time visitors to Munich and we are in the process of planning our trip. We would love to take a day to travel to the Eagles Nest and also the Salt Mines. Is this do-able on the same day - and can you buy tickets in advance?

Cheers

Using public transport? Damn far for a day trip.

DB timetable

http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/e

From: Munich

To: Kehlsteinparkplatz

To: Salzbergwerk, Berchtesgaden

Kehlsteinparkplatz is the end point of the Eagle's Nest road. From there you take the elevator for the last 124 meters to the Eagle's Nest. The Eagle's Nest road is not a road open to the public, only the RVO buses can drive there. A special tariff applies.

Salzbergwerk = salt mine

You can use the Bayern Ticket for this trip. A day ticket covering all regional trains in Bavaria. Also most local public transport, e.g. the S-Bahn, U-Bahn, trams and buses in Munich. Also the buses to the salt mine. But not the Eagle's Nest buses. EUR 28,00 for 2-5 persons. Bayern Ticket is valid

Mo-Fr: from 9am till 3am next day

Sa,Su: from midnight till 3am next day

Select at the DB timetable as means of transport "only local transport" if you want to use the Bayern Ticket.

If you plan to do this on a weekday and want to use the connection departing from Munich Hbf at 08:48 you can buy additional tickets to the first stop past 9am (in this case Grafing - EUR 7,20 pp) and use the Bayern Ticket from there on.

No.

You might want to spend the night in that part of the Alps near the Eagles Nest. The scenery is beautiful and as the previous poster said, it's a long way there and back for a day trip.

Thanks for your replies. It does seem far away - We have worked out that its going to take nearly 3 hours so we will probably leave it and go somewhere a bit closer. We would welcome any suggestions - we have included Augusburg and Dachau in our plans.

Thanks again.
