Where is the best area to stay in Munich?

We are off to Munich at the end of November for three nights and we are wondering which area to stay in! We have looked at countless hotels, but we are wondering where is the best place to stay with things such as supermarkets, bars and restaurants nearby!

Can someone help?

Anywhere with easy walk to Marienplatz, lots of choice depending on Budget. Can't get better on a short visit and direct from airport on Sbahn..

I definitely can recommend Hotel Carat, which is just a 10 minute walk away from Marienplatz. It's two short blocks from the Sendlinger Tor U-bahn station and tram stops. Very centrally located, lots of restaurants and shops in all directions from the hotel lobby.

Really helpful people at the reception desk, great breakfast room, and a little teeny bar actually inside the hotel lobby. Easy to put a beer on your room tab and then take it to the outdoor patio to relax. We had an apartment, which ran aobut 110 euros, including breakfast and wifi. Hotel rooms can be had for quite a bit less than that, think I saw a 69 euro rate web special for a double room not that long ago. There's a bakery near the U-bahn station, in case breakfast is not included in the room rate and you're on a budget...

Have a great visit to Munich!

I second Stoofer, any hotel in the old historic centre around Marienplatz is ideal.

Please see here for a map of what I consider is the historic centre: maps.google.de/maps?hl=en&mid=1317145845

Nice tip, BM Johnson........though if staying in Hotel Carat I'd use Sendlinger Tor station as with luggage it's a bit of a trek from Marienplatz station. Needs one change from airport, at Marienplatz..

I agree completely, maybe I wasn't clear enough in my original post. It would be silly for for anyone to take the U-bahn to Marienplatz and then backtrack on foot to Hotel Carat, when Sendlinger Tor U-bahn station is only two blocks form the hotel. The ten minute walk to Marienplatz from the Hotel Carat was solely in reference to restaurants, sightseeing, shops, etc.

For a slightly higher budget of around EUR 120 for a double try here:

www.hotelblauerbock.de

Hard to find a better location, it's on a pedestrian street opposite the lovely

Viktualienmarkt, quiet but only 300 yds from Marienplatz. Bars and cafes just across the street.
