Munich to Prague

We are considering renting a car and driving from Munich to Prague, spend one night and one day and back again. How are the highways between the two cities? Would it be an easy drive or not? How about the scenery? Would this be advisable or not?

Thanks,

Unless you are planning to stop enroute, I would just take the bus. There is a direct bus that is quite comfotrable and very reasonably priced. It does seem like a long way to go for an overnight though.

It will take between 4 and 5 hours to drive Munich to Prague. Probably the quickest route is the Autobahn to Deggendorf, then cross country (through the Bavarian Forest and Sumava), on the B85 to the border at Bayerisch Eisenstein. From there, head towards Pilsen, via Klatovy. You join the motorway to Prague just south of Pilsen. You will need a motorway sticker for the Czech motorway. You can purchase one either at the kiosk just beyond the border at Eisenstein or at petrol stations in the Czech Republic. The shortest duration for the sticker is 10 days and will cost 310CZK http://www.motorway.cz/stickers. Also not all car hire companies in Germany, will allow you to take their cars into the Czech Republic. Some will, so check with the car hire company. Driving in Prague and finding parking can be an issue. Prague has many narrow streets with limited or no parking, lots of one way systems as well as trams to contend with. If you do decide to drive, I would suggest you book a hotel that offers guaranteed secure parking.

The scenery through the Bavarian Forest and Sumava National Parks is lovely and I think worth the drive.

The bus will take 4 hours 39 minutes and cost 29€ per person each direction. Tickets can be booked via the bahn.de website
