June 2013 - road and rail closures due to flooding

Munich City has escaped the worst of the rain and flooding and is fully open for business but some of the tourist areas where you may think of making a day trip to are currently badly affected.

Here's a brief overview (as of midday 3rd June) as most up to date information is only in German:

Rail: the line between Munich and Salzburg is flooded so there are no trains to there or Vienna or Berchtesgaden.

There are also no trains running between Munich and Innsbruck via Kufstein or Mittenwald nor to and from Italy.

The Frankfurt-Vienna line is also closed from Passau onwards meaning there are no trains from Germany to mid and eastern Austria at all on any crossing.

Road, there's many B roads blocked by flooding or landslides in the region south and east of Munich but the most major blockage is of the Autobahn A8 between Munich and Salzburg which is completely flooded and closed.

The flood water is still rising so it'll be a number of days before things settle down again.

@34 take the bus to Füssen

@33 + @34: train route Füssen to Munich is not affected

@32 + @34: CNL night train Munich to Venice

This train was cancelled last night. Route is via Salzburg and also this railway is at the moment interrupted. However way too early to predict anything for the 19th June.

Munich itself is fine - no flooding. There is a water reservoir, the Sylvenstein-Stausee, that currently still prevents any flooding of Munich itself. ... Likewise, the connection to the airport is not affected.

On Thrusday (06.06) my husband and I are supposed to drive to Italy (north-east, area of Udine) for a wedding on Saturday. We have to be back on Sunday, as my husband has to catch a business flight. Did any of you endeavour such route, i.e. Munich-Salzburg-Villach-Udine, in the last days or today? I am checking the german website of ADAC and the very useful website stau.info, and I am aware the A8 is currently partially closed and there is a detour to avoid the flooded area. I would like to have an idea of how long it takes to get from Munich to Italy via the A8, how slow the traffic is, etc. Many thanks! Great post!

#43 - the A8 motorway to Salzburg is COMPLETELY closed in both directions between Bernau am Chiemsee and Bergen junctions and is still under water. The police say that it will be open on Thursday at the earliest. Diversion routes are very slow with all the traffic and the authorities are advising people to stay away from the area altogether if possible, i.e. if going to vienna then go via Passau (but currently that motorway is also under threat from flooding from the Danube at Deggendorf .

Luckily the motorway is fine as far as the Junction for the 93 and you can go to Italy over the Brenner Pass and onto Udine that way should the A8 Motorway still not be open all the way to Salzburg by the time you are travelling.

It will take an hour or more longer according to google maps.

travelling by plane train or automobile from Vienna to Munich?

Anyhow, the situation is going from bad to worse with regards to the Roads.

The A3 (Nuremburg-Passau-Vienna) is now flooded and completely closed between Passau and Deggendorf. That was the suggested diversion route to get from Munich to Vienna.

No word on when the A8 between Munich and Salzburg will be fully opened.

For news on what roads are opened and closed then the best reference is the Bavarian Government website http://www.bayerninfo.de/en

The german site is more comprehensive BUT all issues and closures are in english with standard text (as would appear on a sat nav unit as this is the reference feed that supplies the sat navs)

48. Re: June 2013 - road and rail closures due to flooding

Regarding Munich Salzburg, there will be a limited intercity service provided till June 8th running via Mühldorf.

IC 2946: Salzburg Hbf 07:56, arrives München Hbf 10:10

IC 2948: Salzburg Hbf 13:56, arrives München Hbf 16:10

IC 2947: München Hbf 10:53, arrives Salzburg 13:00

IC 2949: München Hbf 17:44, arrives Salzburg 19:46

Which really just highlights the fact that the line from Munich to Mühldorf and Mühldorf to Salzburg is operating normally which provides a service connecting Munich and Salzburg every 2 hours. Its a connection and takes 45minutes longer than the direct route, but as an alternative its not the worst.

As said previously, trains from Munich to Vienna are running normally, but delayed, via Passau rather than Salzburg
