Done that by car from Stuttgart several times and other destinations in Italy from Frankfurt. No problem at all.

Option 1:

Daytime direct EuroCity train from 39 euros, www.bahn.de/en: Departs 11:38 arrives Venice Santa Lucia at 18:10.

This is a fabulous ride through the scenic Brenner Pass, with lunch served in the elegant Austrian restaurant car. Wonderful!

Option 2:

Direct City Night Line sleeper train, from 59 euros with couchette or from 104 euros with a bed in a 2-bed sleeper, www.bahn.de/en - departs 23:40 arrives 08:24. Time-effective and saves a hotel bill too.

Both options are centre to centre, a flight will take 4 hours of taxis or trains, airports and flight. Nothing beats walking out of Venice station to see the Grand Canal right in front of you, complete with vaporettos and gondolas!
