From Munich International Airport to Dachua Memorial Site

We will be joining a tour group that will begin at NH-Muenchen Airport. As day 1 will be free,

we plan to make a trip to Dachau Memorial Site. We can use the hotel airport shuttle to the Munich International Airport. From the airport, somebody please advise on directions to Dachau Memorial Site. Do we need to go to Munich City Center and catch the S2 train to Dachau? Please also advise on type of ticket to buy for 2 persons. Can we buy this at the airport? If we have extra time in Dachau, is there a place we can visit near the train station. Lastly please, are we able to enter the International Airport to visit the Christmas market? many thanks

Well, there is a connection to Dachau from Munich airport where you don't change at Munich central station, but somewhere near Oberschleißheim. But to be honest, if you don't know your way around, I wouldn't do this. I mean even as a native speaker who has taken the S-Bahn many times, I'd think twice about that connection.

Anyway, go to www.mvv-muenchen.de and research a trip from Munich airport to Dachau, KZ-Gedenkstätte. (If "KZ-Gedenkstätte" doesn't work, try "Alte Römerstr. 75" which is the street address.) Basically, you'll take the first S-Bahn that's ready to depart, then change at Munich Hauptbahnhof to the S2, direction Petershausen. Once or twice an hour, there'll also be a commuter train, which you can take with the same ticket and which is more comfortable because it's not so slow. Research departure times of the commuter train on www.bahn.de

At Dachau, you just follow the signs and take the bus to the memorial. Once, I walked it, which took me about 45 minutes and I walk fast.

Well, Dachau city is not spectacular. If you have time on your hands, you could take a look at the city center. When leaving the S-Bahn station, just go straight ahead, and in about 5-10 minutes, you'll reach the shopping street.

Oh, your ticket. Buy an MVV day ticket for the entire MVV area (Tageskarte Gesamttarifgebiet). You need this since Munich airport is so far from the city. There is a partner day ticket for the entire MVV area. It's a little cheaper than two individual day tickets, and if you're not planning to split up at any time during the day, this is what you should get.

Christmas market? Well, there's a small Christmas market in December, between terminal 1 and terminal 2. The area is accessible to everyone, even if you aren't flying.

Here is the map in case you don't have one for the public transportation system.

For the quickest trip, take the S1 line to Liam and change to the Green Line Train (S2) going to Petershausen and get off at Dachau. Take the bus out front to the camp takes about 10 minutes.

FraNane,

from the airport to Oberschleißheim there is S1, then you take bus 291, which stops 15 mins away from the memorial site (E. - Reismüller - Str.). You will catch the bus if you take the S - train leaving the airport hourly at xx:11. Note this bus operates Mon to Fri only and the memorial site is closed Mondays. The fastest would be a taxi, which would be about 50€.

The old town of Dachau is not a must - have, but it is quite picturesque, with the castle in the middle and a nice beergarden close by and a great view over the area of Munich. Definitely worth while a stop. Bus 722 brings you to the city centre (Dachau, Rathaus), every 20 mins, but it does not stop directly at the memorial site - again you need to walk 15 mins approx. The assistants on site will show you the way.

Back to the station you can then either walk or take the bus (no. 719) - have a look at www.mvv-muenchen.de This page is also available in English.
