Octoberfest in '07

My husband and I want to go to Germany for Octoberfest next year. Is it awfully crowded? We are thinking of doing the Romantic Road driving tour. Will accomodations be full that time of year? Any recommendations?

Hi! I'm glad you have something else planned if you are going to take a trip to Germany. Oktoberfest is one of those things that you do just to say you've gone. Obviously there are many people that have a great time and return, but it's definitely not my cup of tea. It is possible for it to be remotely enjoyable if you get there really early (or get reservations-start now) and sit in one of the beer tents. Even then you'll be stuffed in like a sausage. On a regular occasion, Germans (like many Europeans) don't have the personal space requirements that Americans do, let alone when they are trying to accomodate that many people. The entire fest is wall to wall people and it's near impossible to get a beer if you don't have a seat. My husband and I have gone and so now we can say we've done it. We find that it's much more fun just to go to the Hofbrau Haus and hang out there. It's the same atmosphere with much less hassle. If I were you I would go while on my trip of the Romantic Road and take a train into Munich from a nearby city. Another option would be to check if any of the places you'll be staying are having their town's own Oktoberfest. Towns all over Germany have their own celebrations and are sometimes much more fun. Good Luck, I hope you have a great time!

Oktoberfest Barometer

oktoberfest.de/de/02/content/wiesnbarometer/

shows when the fest is less (green) or awfully (red) crowded).

Just pick a less crowded day/time.

Accommodations in and around Munich will be more than full. You definitly should secure your accommodation NOW.

You could stay in Wurzburg and then take the train into Munich even for the day....it would be nice to escape the crowds...there is direct train service..Frankfurt..Wurzburg..Munich which I took last month. Then you could do day trips to Rothenberg etc. I cannot imagine trying to park a car in Munich during Oktoberfest...we had a hard time trying to park during a normal November weekend;.

Thanks guys. I'm not a big fan of large crowds so I think I will take you guys advice and check on smaller celebrations outside of Munich. Again, Thanks!

Stuttgart has the second largest beer festival in the world (29Sept-14Oct), Cannstatter Volksfest, with about 60% of the number of people at Munich's, the tents half the size (5000 vs. 10,000 people), but with more rides, some of them better associated with amusement parks. There is also a French village section for lovers of French food and wine. It will also be crowded later in the evenings with reservations almost mandatory, but before then there should be no problem getting a seat in the large tents if it isn't a weekend. There are also a number of interesting things to see and do in Stuttgart and its surroundings. www.stuttgart-tourist.de Delta flies directly there from Atlanta.

Delta flies to both Munich and Stuttgart from Atlanta. The return Delta flight from Munich departs at 10:00 and the fight from Stuttgart departs at 11:10 so I would suggest that you fly into Munich first, visit this city and the Oktoberfest.

You could then rent at car; drive to Füssen to see the castles and then along the Romantic Road to Rothenburg or Würzburg. You could drop the car off in Stuttgart.

The website for the castles is http://www.hohenschwangau.de/562.0.html

The website for the Romantische Straße is www.romantischestrasse.de/showpage.php…

There are a number of sights to see in the Stuttgart area and ‘marcopolka’ was kind in guiding us around for a few hours.

We were recently on the flight from Stuttgart to Atlanta and used the S-Bahn to get to the airport. We left downtown at 08:10 and were checked in with our boarding passes by 09:15.
