Any advice/ tips would be gratefully received. Getting from the airport? Sites? Eating and drinking?

Many Thanks in advance for any information you can give.

From Tegel Airport you can use the JetExpress Buses TXL to the Hauptbahnhof. They run every 6-7 minutes.

Single trip ticket Berlin AB is EUR 2,80.

A small group day ticket for Berlin AB is EUR 19,90.

An alternative would be a Berlin WelcomeCard 72h which is EUR 27,90 pp. This card covers public transport for 72 hours and gives also discounts on various sights.

Plenty. You have to select.

A good idea for first times is to start with a walking tour.

Berlin Hauptbahnhof (main train station) is rather new. Central but was built on a plot of land deserted due WWII and the Cold War. Thus the area lacks the common centrality features one may expect at such a place. Thus to get to attractive areas with restaurants and bars you'll have to use public transport.

The only good thing about the Ibis you are booking is that it's next door to the Hamburger Bahnhof, but unless you're seriously interested in modern art that isn't a great draw for you. The area is a desert, and if you can change your hotel I'd strongly advise you to do do. (The Ibis Berlin Mitte, for example, near Alexanderplatz, is within easy reach of Hackescher Markt and Rosenthaler Platz, both much better areas for eating and drinking.)

For such a short visit, you'll need to do careful preparation so that you don't waste your time. What sort of sites do you want to see? Get a good guidebook - the Rough Guide is probably the best - or search the web, for information about "sites". As already suggested, do a walking tour: Insider Tours and Berlin Walks are both very good.

We just got back from our first visit and I would highly recommend two tours: the Fork and Walk tours: East meets West and the Fat tire bike tour; it is SUCH a beautiful city, seeing it with a guide along with you is the best way to see it for the first time and these two tours were our absolute favorites. Enjoy!

The Berlin transportation system makes it easy to get just about anywhere from anywhere, IME.
