best area to stay???

Planning our very first visit to Berlin so know nothing of the areas. We want to be central located so we can walk about to see the sights and take in nightlife. What areas are the most central???

Difficult to say: Berlin is not a city with one centre, partially due to the Cold War division, during which different centres have evolved in the East and the West and the post-unification period, in which the pre-War centre at Potsdamer Platz has been rebuilt.

Theoretically, if you stay at Mitte, you are within walking distance from most sites (not all in any case, as this is a huge city). However, Mitte is a big district, and there are many areas that are less favourable.

Night life areas are very dynamic in Berlin - there are several areas and things constantly evolve, new areas become the new club areas, old areas are deemed too "touristy" or "sell out".

We've been to Berlin twice this year related to a family matter...we stayed in West Berlin near the Ku'dam and zoo first time, then this past trip was Mitte, East Berlin...We much prefer East Berlin..lots of stuff to see within walking distance...We will probably stay in the East from now on, because you can easily get to the Ku'dam area via subway...

We have just returned from Berlin and stayed on Gendenmarkt at the Jilton Hotel. Location is superb in the Mitte area, you can walk everywhere easily and if you can get a good price, I would strongly recommend the Hilton. Try Booking.com as they have good offers at present. We didn't know Berlin before we went but couldn't have chosen a better location.
