Cabaret??

Any suggestions of a Cabaret to go to? Maybe one that is both German and English, the part of the city would be helpful.

Also a dance club? Is it hard to find out where the spontaneous parties break out that you always hear of?

Any other suggestions about seeing the city, I will be there two full days in September (I know not enough time, I have been there once but it is my girlfriends first time out of the country)

"Kabaret" here refers in general to a night club specializing in political humour. You not only have to understand German but also be able to get all the references. So the Distel, the Kneifzange, the Wählmäuse and the Klimperkasten are probably not for you.

But there are a few places where music predominates, and even if you don't get the snarky (or smutty) lyrics, you can at least enjoy the performances. One place that does that is Bar Jeder Vernunft. It's not actually a bar - the name is a play on words meaning "without any sense" or something like that. It's actually a kind of tent with tiny tables crowded around a stage. Performers tend to be - I guess "quirky" is the word. For instance, I recently saw "Preslisa and the Körnel Parka Twins." "Preslisa" is a perky young woman who's mad about obscure Elvis songs and the bad movies they're associated with. She plays film clips and sings the songs, accompanying herself on ukelele. The "Körnel Parka Twins" who back her up are two seasoned Berlin session musicians. It was a great evening. You can get a sample of Preslisa here: http://bit.ly/ker8NS

Unfortunately Bar Jeder Vernunft is having something called A.S.S-DUR in the early part of September, which is not recommended for those who don't speak German. Look it up here: http://www.bar-jeder-vernunft.de

Another tent nightspot (related to BJV) is Tipi am Kanzleramt. You may be in luck, because they're actually performing "Cabaret - Das Musical" there until mid-September. Check it out: http://bit.ly/iT2kEA

The Kookaburra Comedy Club has English comedy night with the indefatigable Kim Eustice and others every 2nd Tuesday at 20:30 and every 2nd Saturday at 23:45. www.comedyclub.de/berlin/english-shows.php

Another thing that might float your boat is the Kleine Nachtrevue, an attempt to re-create a naughty 1920s cabaret, with nudity and erotic-themed performances. Read about it here: http://www.kleine-nachtrevue.de/en/

Or the Friedrichstadtpalast, with lines of chorus girls, elaborate costumes, a huge stage, and over 100 performers – singers, dancers, musicians, acrobats in the current production Yma. This is a favourite for out-of-towners. http://www.show-palace.eu/en/shows/
