Hotel between Schoenfeld and Tegel airports

Things were much simpler when there was only going to be one airport. Currently, I will be arriving at Schoenfeld on 8 Sept around 20:00 and leaving from Tegel on 10 Sept at 09:35. I am trying to figure out where to stay for the 2 nights in between. It seems like maybe I should stay near the Zoo station as I think there is an Airport Express from Schoenfeld and then an express bus to Tegel. Or is there someplace better to stay that would be convenient for both?

If that is the correct area, any hotel recommendations for a female solo traveller would be great too. I'd like to be about €100/night for an ensuite single, but can go a little higher if necessary. So far I've found the Swissotel for €139/night, but I'm not sure where exactly I should be looking.

Thanks.

Just like Zoologischer Garten, you can also pick a hotel near Hauptbahnhof (e.g. Meininger), or near Alexanderplatz (e.g. Park Inn), of the same reasons.

At Zoologischer Garten, some hotels that you might want to consider - right at the station and not 2 blocks away like Swissotel:

- Aletto (I don't remember which one though and they have several)

- Indigo

- Excelsior

- Waldorf Astoria (your budget is too low, but they might have opening rates?)

- Motel One KuDamm

At Hauptbahnhof, I only know of Meininger I have mentioned before

Thanks. I will check out those suggestions. Is one area better than another of the ones you have suggested?

Zoo is by far the closets to TXL airport, and if you're not a morning person, I would say every second counts,

My only reservation about Zoo is your mentioning of being a single woman alone. Don't get me wrong - there isn't a place in Berlin (or at least in mainstream Berlin) that is more dangerous to a woman travelling on her own (barring the general danger that could lurk everywhere, also 5 minutes from one's home in a quiet suburb). However, the area immediately around Zoo station used to be a bit seedy and there are still some "leftovers" - a sex shop etc. Nothing too harmful and as I said the area is totally safe within reason, but still this might be an element in deciding.

On the journey planner at www.bvg.de I get 17 min by X9 bus from Zoo station, 20 min by bus TXL from Hauptbahnhof, and 37 min from Alexanderplatz to Tegel. Does that sound about right?

From Schoenfeld, I get 29 min by RE7 bus to Alexanderplatz, 35 min by RB14 bus to Hauptbahnhof, and 45 min to Zoo station by RB14 or RE7 bus.

So from that I guess I'd either want the Zoo station or Hauptbahnhof. Is the Hauptbahnhof area better or worse than the area around the Zoo station? I was figuring it wouldn't be that attractive, as for some reason areas around train stations never are, but I don't want to be somewhere unsafe.

I'm reasonably comfortable in cities and travel solo a fair amount. How does it compare to King's Cross area in London, which people sometimes say is unsafe but where I've never had a problem?

OK, I booked the Motel One Ku'Damm, which according to Google Maps is a 6 min walk from Zoo station. It seems like there is more to see in that area than in the Hauptbahnhof area, and I've heard pretty much the same comments on both areas as far as people hanging around the station.

I can cancel the hotel room up until the day of arrival, so if there's something wrong with this plan, I can change it, so further suggestions would be welcomed.

Your plan is fine. You're better off near Bahnhof Zoo than Hauptbahnhof. The Hauptbahnhof is new, and the area around it pretty desolate still. That's not to say it would be unsafe: it's just not a very nice area to stay in. Given your original parameters, I'd have said it was a choice between Zoo and Alexanderplatz, but as Zoo is closer to Tegel for your early flight out, you should be fine there.

Nothing in Berlin is as bad as London's King's Cross area.
