Travel from Berlin to Potsdam by Rail (a day trip)

Hello:

Is it true that you can travel by rail extremely cheap on Sundays between Berlin and Potsdam? We will be spending 4 days in Berlin in August. Suggestions about what to do in and around Berlin are also appreciated. Thanks.

Potsdam is in the local public transport zone Berlin C. Thus all you need is a ticket for Berlin ABC.

Day ticket for Berlin (zones AB) is € 6,50. For Berlin + Potsdam (zones ABC) € 7,00.

4 days is not much time for Berlin. Thus apart from a day trip to Potsdam concentrate on Berlin.

If there are more than 2 of you travelling together the Kleingruppenkarte ABC works out even better value (for 3 to 5 people). The tickets are valid on both S-Bahn and regional train out to Potsdam and on the buses and trams in Potsdam too.

And yes, with only 4 days a day-trip to Potsdam is the most you can manage. Many people include it only when in Berlin for a week but if you don't feel too rushed with 3 days for Berlin, then go, it is well worth it.

Thanks. Actually there are four of us: three adults and a 15-year old. Is the karte included in the Berlin Pass? Or do we buy it separately? The 15-year old is not very interested in museums. Is it still a good idea to buy the pass? Thanks so much.

@Amal50

Your latest post is a bit confusing, there is no mention of a museum pass in previous posts in this thread, only a 'Group ticket' which is valid for up to 5 persons

bvg.de/index.php/…75554.html

Only the Berlin Welcome card has an option to include the 'Museum Island pass', and this card has to be bought for each person, unless the child is under the age of 15 (and only the ABC version includes option for children)

"Berlin Pass" is an expensive bundle of existing other offers - like the Berlin Museum Pass - by a London based company. You're generally doing better to buy these offers separately when in Berlin. E.g. buying in your case mini group day tickets (Kleingruppenkarte) for each day either just for Berlin (zones AB) or Berlin + Potsdam (zones ABC). And the museum pass for the 3 adults.

Two museums I would recommend for the 15-year old not very interested in museums

- the Pergamon Museum (simply outstanding displays)

- the technical museum (which has e.g. the first computer on display)

Museum Pass for him/her makes no sense. Under 18 years old are free in quite a number of museums, e.g. the Pergamon Museum. And the entrance fee for the technical museum is EUR 4,00 (free for under 18 years old from 3pm on).

For an individual the Berlin Pass or Welcome card may make sense financially as it works out little more than the transport tickets alone but the Kleingruppenkarte is such a bargain, in your case those cards aren't a good deal

The Welcome card includes a lot more places than the Berlin card, and discounts in some restaurants etc too, not just museums.
