Pensions in Berlin

A family of 2 older adults and a teenager daughter are traveling to Berlin for the first time. Have received information from the following pensions: Galerie, Peter, and Bergenz. Any thoughts on what would be a better choice? We will be flying in from Chicago, staying for 5 nights, then leaving for Amsterrdam. We will be using public transportation.

Thank you

If you tell us where these establishments are located, you may get more responses. Berlin is a very big city and these places are quite obscure.

We've had friends stay at Pension Peters and they thought it was great. The rooms are simple, Ikea type furnishings; the breakfast is the typical German breakfast fare, BUT truly it was the people working there that sold the day for them - they know their Berlin.

Excellent access to transportation - Savignyplatz S-Bahn, Zoologischer Garten, and Uhlandstrasse U-Bahn. - the transportation network provides quick and easy access to everywhere you need to go while in Berlin. Plus it's in a terrific area for restaurants, bars, and shopping.

OK, just from the point of view of location.

Pension Peters is right beside Savignyplatz, which is the old café district of West Berlin. Lots of small restaurants, cafés and bars, trendy little boutiques etc. It's very near an S-Bahn and a U-Bahn station. Bleibtreustrasse is a particularly beautiful street in this neighbourhood, with many ornate late 19th century houses built when Berlin was expanding to the west in the wake of the 1870s economic boom. Mommsen-, Knesebeck- and Grolmannstrassen were very hip back in the 1980s when I lived in West Berlin and although their coolosity has faded, they're still nice streets.

Galerie is on a quiet residential street just back of Olivaerplatz and Kurfürstendamm. The Ku-damm is very expensive and stylish in this area, with boutiques from all the top-label fashion designers like Gauthier, Armani etc. Jump on a bus and in 10 minutes you're at Bahnhof Zoo. Otherwise, it's a sort of bourgeois part of West Berlin.

Bregenz is right beside Friedrichstrasse near Checkpoint Charlie, near where the Wall once ran. While the neighbourhood is somewhat nondescript, you're a few minutes away from the upscale shopping on Friedrichstrasse, and close to Brandenburg Gate, Museum Island, Unter den Linden, Gendarmenmarkt -- all the attractions tourists come to Berlin to see.

bill2p, in your reply you have mixed the location of Galerie and Bregenz. I have stayed twice at Bregenz and it is located close to Olivaer Platz, you can take bus 109 from the airport.

My apologies, I have indeed switched Bregenz and Galerie around.

Aside from location, how was Pension Bregenz as accommodation?

Bus 109 is from Tegel airport, just to clarify. Pension Bregenz gets very good reviews

As bill2p mentioned it is in a quiet residential street. Safe location, close to transport, friendly family, clean rooms, small elevator to 4th floor, small breakfast area in the lobby. Very good value, could stay again any time.
