First night dinner

We are staying at the Circus Apartments and would like some advice on where to eat on our first night? Somewhere nearby that preferably does German food. Thanks

The Circus has a very good restaurant, Fabisch, serving German food with a modern twist.

For subsequent dinners, Torstrasse has a wealth of good eating places of all sorts - not many German, though.

And 10 minutes walk down Rosenthalerstrasse are the many fleshpots of Hackescher Markt. For good German food try Brauhaus Lemke, in Dircksenstrasse, underneath the S-bahn arches.

Within an easy 10-minute walk of Circus Apartments on Choriner Strasse (which is not in the same location as the Circus Hotel), you have the Alt-Berliner Kaffeestube, a real old-fashioned German restaurant at the corner of Wolliner Strasse and Fürstenberger Strasse. Just around the corner from the Circus Apartments is Die Pumpe, a typical neighbourhood gastropub. On Schwedter Strasse is an old favourite Italian restaurant called Donath, and another popular Italian, Pappa e Ciccia on the corner of Choriner and Schwedter. Nearby is Kastanienallee, which is full of restaurants, bars and cafés from Zionskirchplatz up to Eberswalderstrasse, and on fine nights the outdoor tables are a magnet for thousands of young people. Oderberger Strasse is also full of eateries. Most specialize is some other cuisine than German, though.

Oh, and I forgot to take note of Der Imbiss W more or less at the corner of Kastanienallee and Zionskirchplatz. My friend Gordon W, a Canadian "food artist" from Toronto, runs this highly unusual and eccentric snack bar where you you can enjoy original freshly prepared and delicious Asian-fusion-style dishes on a budget. Look for the upside-down McDonalds "M."
