Picnic spots in Berlin

Hi all

I am going to be in Berlin with my partner in late August. We run a picnic blog in Sydney, Australia (www.thepicnicpress.com) and wish to continue this on our travels. We wanted suggestions as to good local places to pick up food and coffee that are around a beautiful park or picnic spot (this is the format of our blog). I would love some local suggestions please for Berlin - is there anywhere you could recommend?

Thanks in advance,

Leanne

If you're into Thai or Vietnamese food try Preussenpark next to Fehrbelliner Platz (underground line U3) in Wilmersdorf on Saturdays or Sundays. Very unique and you don't even have to bring your food: findingberlin.com/the-best-thai-streetfood-i…

Other places would be:

- English Garden with the Teehaus in Tiergarten Park: http://www.teehaus-tiergarten.com/

- very romantic Pfaueninsel (you'd have to bring your picnic hamper here): http://www.pfaueninsel.info/

- Park at Gleisdreieck: gruen-berlin.de/parks-gaerten/…

- Treptower Park and Insel der Jugend: http://www.treptowerpark.de/

- Victoriapark in Kreuzberg: www.visitberlin.de/en/spot/viktoriapark

For Potsdam (which offers several lakes and castle paks):

Lakeside at Babelsberg (lake "Tiefer See") between the official public beach and the cafe Kleines Schloss:

Or:

Neuer Garten, north eastern end of lake Heiliger See. A 10 minute walk north of the lake through the park(passing Cecilienhof castle) you'll find a restaurant with brewery (Meierei). …verwaltungsportal.de/mandate-16433-fotoeins…

Moreover the is a small island directly in Potsdam city center next to the main station with a fantastic garden and a bistro: Freundschaftsinsel

Many bakeries offer sandwiches and similiar for take-away. Supermarkets also have often several things like salad, desserts for take-away. In the city centre you'll find many other places who offer food for take-away like Dean&David at Kranzler Eck Kurfürstendamm 21 or Scoom inside the underground station Alexanderplatz

Berlin is blessed with many parks and plazas. If the weather is good, I like to buy picnic items from the grocery stores and have a quiet lunch in a park or plaza.

There is a large grocery store in the basement of the Alexa shopping center near the Alexanderplatz rail station. I buy some of the fine German rolls, ham and cheese. I like the "butterkase" cheese the best, but Swiss or a soft Dutch cheese will work. I buy a beverage and some fruit. Then I walk past the TV Tower until I find an empty bench among the roses near the Neptune fountain.

I split the rolls with my Swiss Army knife and stuff them with the cheese and ham. While I enjoy my meal, I watch the antics as people take photos, splash and play around the fountain.

I always bring along some plastic forks and spoons and some plastic bags that can be sealed (Ziploc is one trade name for them here in the US) when I travel. The plastic cutlery is great if I find a salad that I like in the grocery stores and the Ziploc bags have a myriad of uses. If I put a beverage inside my day pack or suitcase, I always put it in a Ziploc bag in case it leaks or breaks.

I would go to the food hall at the KaDeWe and pick up some treats. Then wander to the Tiergarten to consume them

Or the excellent gourmet food department in the Galeria Kaufhof at Alexanderplatz. Great cheese counter, also sausage counter, nice made-up salads, and lovely fresh fruit and vegetables

Two options for consuming them:

Take the 200 bus to Tiergarten Strasse.

Or:

Take the M1 tram to Rosenthaler Platz and walk up Weinsbergweg for a couple of minutes to the small, pretty Volkspark Weinberg, one of Berlin's great venues for people-watching.

Another option would be to get some food in the basement of Galleries Lafayette and wander around to the Gendarmenmarkt to eat, it is a lovely square to sit in

The Berlin Zoological Garden will be a perfect picnic spot for the adults as well as for the children. The children will be so excited to seeing the various collection of species in the world. you have many decent restaurants inside the zoo itself. You also have many local foods outside the zoo where you can get anything you like to have then.
