Places to stay in Berlin

My friends and I are planning to celebrate the New Year in Berlin and would like to know a good area to stay or hotel. We are in our late 20's. We want to stay in a hotel where it's close to the monuments, things not to miss while in Berlin. Also, we'd like to stay near some nice bars, so we can walk. We are a big group (8 people) and I don't really want problems with finding taxis, etc. Any suggestions on bars??? Also, a restaurant to have a good New Year's Eve dinner... THANK YOU all for your help! I greatly appreciate it! Oh yah, which airport should we land at?? I was looking for flights and I saw that there are two airports, which one is closer to the city????

Actually there are 3 ones. With Tempelhof being the most central.

But this plays no real role. All are well connected by public transport. Single ticket for any trip inside Berlin is EUR 2,10. In your case mini group day tickets maybe however the better alternative.

But to get the priorities right:

1. you have to find a flight (to whatever airport in Berlin)

2. you have to find accommodation.

Best would be somewhere what is on the map of the first linked page marked as "City Centre East".

That's a combination hard to find. Berlin has no single city centre like most other European cities. It's a huge and widespread city. Public transport is however excellent, available 24 hours and quite cheap. On NYE the normal night schedule is even abolished and many lines run on their day time frequency.

Hi,

I prefer Tegel airport (TXL) as it is closer to the centre than Schoenefeld (SXF). Easyjet just uses SXF while my favourite airline AirBerlin uses TXL.

When it comes to location I'd recommend either Mitte or Prenzlauer Berg especially when it comes to nightlife. There you find countless good nightclubs and bars. I prefer Prenzlauer Berg as it is cheaper and less touristy. The main celebrations are in Mitte at Brandenburger Tor. The public transport runs the whole night so you don't have to stay necessarily in Mitte especially as the Hotels there are rather expensive. Prenzlauer Berg is a district just next to Mitte so it's still close to the celebrations. If both, Mitte and P'Berg are too expensive you could also look for an accomondation in Charlottenburg. It's not really close to some nightlife but there are countless Hotels with reasonable prices. From there you reach Mitte and Prenzlauer Berg within ~30 minutes.

For accomondations you might check the following. All of them are perfectly located:

A cheap Hotel in the city centre is Ibis Mitte:

Ackselhaus:

Here is a little review:

This is very close to Kollwitzplatz, the vibrant centre of the Prenzlauer Berg with countless nice restaurants and bars.

Another accomondation near there:

Kastanienhof:

Near there is also Hotel Jurine:

Hello Alfacinha711,

Berlin is very dispersed. Thus, to some extent it does matter where you stay. Still, Berlin's public transport system is superb, so you always get from anywhere to everywhere and back, it's only a matter of travelling time. Personally I experienced that especially for 1st-time-vistors the area of Mitte around Oranienburger Strasse, Hackescher Markt, and Rosenthaler Strasse is most ideal for exploring all interesting parts of Berlin while having lots of nice bars and restaurants in this upcoming neighbourhood. Also in terms of cool shopping, and vicinity to all important sights this area is the best. Perfectly located in this area are Arcotel Velvet, Hotel Märkischer Hof, Hotel Augustinenhof, Dietrich Bonhoeffer Haus, Ramada Hotel Mitte, Hotel Allegra, Lux 11, and Hotel Amelie Berlin. Really cheap are these hostels (check the apartment offer @ Heart of Gold Hostel): Heart of Gold Hostel and Citystay Mitte. Most should be listet on tripadvisor.com. Check which od them has the best deals for you. Have a great stay!

This summer we stayed at Hotel Arcotel Velvet in Mitte and it was sooooo great! Very athmospheric, not too expensive, and close to such a bunch of nice bars and restaurants, you cannot even come close to trying all of them! East is where Berlin is exciting!!! go there!! We could walk to all major sights and even for going to clubs in Friedrichhein it was o.k. using S-Bahn. Our hotel was also very well connected to the Prenzlau Berg, where many good restaurants can be found as well (simply use the tram!) friends of us had their hotel near Kurfurstendamm and it took them much longer to get back to their hotel in the evenings, although public transportation was very efficient and reliable. We experienced that Berlin was very cheap compared to other cities, also in the area sorrounding our hotel. Go now, as long as it is like that & have fun!

Does anyone know if the Park Plaza Hotel in the Prenzlauer Berg area is in a good neighborhood...close to nightlife and public transportation?

Storkower Strasse is not the nice part of Prenlauer Berg. However. the area is safe & there is good public transportation. It is not in walking distance to monuments, and around Storkower Str. there is few nightlife tec. Check affordable hostels and hotels in Mitte, if you wants to be close to monuments, nightlife and bars:

Tegel is very close to the center, Schönefeld a bit further away, but Schönefeld is very well-connected by public transport.

Hi,

Storkower Str. is a bit out of the way. The area around Storkower Straße/Landsberger Allee is not very nice and there is nothing to do/to see. And of course there is no nightlife, no restaurants, no bars. The only good point is that it doesn't take you long into the city centre (east)...just about 20 minutes with tram. I would try to find something else.

Absolutely perfect, I know of friends staying there & they loved it: walking distance to bars and restaurants, very lively area, good public transportation links, very close to most sightseeing - perfect location. Often they have very good deals, the hotel is really nice.
