Berlin hasn't really a centre like some other cities do or at least it is not compact but widespread.

Basically anywhere within in Central Berlin ist fine as Berlin has a pretty good public transport system and it never takes you long getting anywhere. Most people either stay in Mitte or Charlottenburg (Ku'Damm area). In Mitte you'll find the majority of sights while in the Ku'Damm area you'll have heaps of shopping opportunities on your door step plus a couple of sights thrown in. From Charlottenburg it's only a few stops to Mitte on the S-Bahn.

Friends of ours stayed in the following hotels in the Ku'Damm area and really liked them.

Berlin does not have a city centre. There is a number of central areas, Mitte ('Mid Town') is the currently the more interesting part for visitors since it is close to the major sights and there are more interesting shops and nightlife than in the Kurfürstendamm area (which is better merely for mainstream shopping). Check these hotels:

The Melia Berlin

and

Arcotel Velvet

Jolly Hotel Vivaldi

tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g187323-d250461…

These 3 hotels are particularly centrally located, all close to Friedrichstrasse station, and in walking distance to all the major sights, as well as the upcoming parts of Mitte with interesting shops, restaurants, and bars. They all have a very good reputaion, simply check, wich of the has the best deals for you.

Have a pleasent stay!

Thankyou for your replies they have been very usefull. Would you know if the Savoy is too far from centre to be usefull. Its just that someone told us if you are too far away the nightlife is nil.

Berlin has through its history a fairly widespead city centre. The Savoy Hotel is a short walk from the Zoo station and the Ku'Damm and this area is still considered inner city centre. The majority of sights you'll find in Mitte which is only a few stops on the S-Bahn from your hotel.

Nightlife is certainly existent in that area even though the main nightlife (majority of clubs) are found in Mitte or Prenzlauer Berg. Just a five minute walk from your hotel you'll find Savignyplatz/Knesebeckstr./Grolmannstr. where you'll find heaps of nice bars and restaurants. If you jump on the bus or underground for a couple of stops you'll find the area around Winterfeldplatz and Goltzstr. with even more bars and restaurants.

Berlins public transport system is great and it is no problem getting back to your hotel even at night if you want to go out in Mitte or Prenzlauer Berg.
