Eating and Drinking Hamburg Tips

Anyone got any tops tips for eating in drinking in Hamburg?

Looking for the sorts of places that might be recommended by Time Out if they had a guide so not obvious tourist places, but place locals go that are cool but not pretentious.

Can anyone recommend a good guide for eating and drinking in Hamburg?

thanks

Where in Hamburg are you looking for places? Hamburg is big with nearly 2 million people living here.

If you look for something central you can be certain there will be tourists.

Locals as me also go to these places as the well known Portuguese quarter with plenty good restaurants, I personally also like various cafés and restaurants in St. Georg on the street Lange Reihe as Café Uhrlaub, Café Gnosa or the restaurant Vasco Da Gama among others.

There are also a couple of restaurants south of Steinstraße in the city centre where you would not find too many tourists as e.g. the restaurant Laufauf. I wouldn't call it cool but good down to earth (German) food, largely various kind casseroles, more cool and close to the town hall is e.g. Café Paris.

Obviously chains as Block House for steaks, Jim Block for burgers & co and Vapiano for Italian cuisine etc are popular too and you find them all over Hamburg.

With the Internet these days and people posting reviews etc. most great central places do not stay for long a secret.

As noted, we have know idea about price or cuisine. The places I would want to try to visit on a trip to H'burg are: Casse Croute, Turnhalle (Lange Reihe), the Italian restaurant on the first floor of the Aussen Alster Hotel, and outside town a bit Louis Jacob (both the high end and the bistro), Zum Wattkorn (where I have also taken a simple room and which has a wonderful garden) and Landhaus Scherrer. Central Hamburg has lots of pretty good places for a businessman's lunch for about 10 Euros - remarkably inexpensive. There is a fish market with good places to eat. Try smoked eel.

"Landhaus Scherrer"

I as a local personally do not go there anymore these days, it used to be brilliant imo, these days it is not.

But that last post exactly is what I was referring to: good central place = tourists, what last poster is, will eventually know of it.

thanks for all your advice. I am staying central but want to check out interesting neighbourhoods like Karoviertel. Also seen mentions of eating at bullerei - any good?

Bullerei ist pretty good (well as much as I can just it as a vegetarian) but friends like it but again Karoviertel and Schanzenviertel are popular with tourists these days as mentioned in every tourist guide.

If you really fancy something more off the tourist tracks look for a place e.g. in Barmbek, one of the traditional working class areas in Hamburg and close to the Stadtpark, still rather down to earth but more and more discovered by locals with Schanze etc changing for the worse, as Trude http://www.trude-hh.de/ or the Schach-Cafe http://www.schachcafe-hamburg.de/

One central place (not even sure whether listed here on TA) but one of my absolute favourite places: Tarterie St.Pauli http://www.facebook.com/tarterie‎ - as name implies it is in St. Pauli but a bit away from the Reeperbahn - focuses on quiches but has other stuff too, daily changing menu - always a wonderful food experience.

Is there a good website that tells you about good restaurants and bars in Hamburg - sadly my German is not so great so wonder if there is an english version?

Not aware of one particular comprehensive one for Hamburg, I know a few more blog style pages as this one http://restaurant-test-hamburg.de/ but as run privately there are obviously just so many restaurants that can cover but a popular review website is www.restaurant-kritik.de/Deutschland/Hamburg which has a Hamburg section.

Then generic review websites have usually restaurant sections as www.yelp.de/‎

Suppose Google translate can help if language is an issue and no English version available.

Additionally e.g. the Hamburg tourism website has a list with restaurants hamburg-travel.com/experience/… to give an idea though obviously only a small selection of what is on offer or here http://www.hamburg-restaurants.info/ but no reviews.

In regards to bars am personally not too much a bar goer, I prefer for evenings the "Kneipe" style places as the above mentioned Cafe Uhrlaub or Cafe Gnosa. While it sounds like they are cafes, they offer from breakfast, to lunch, cakes and dinner plus drinks in eves everything.

if I go I like Angie's Nightclub (called nightclub but is not fancy or so) http://www.tivoli.de/gastro/angies.html or the Sanktpaulibar http://www.sanktpaulibar.de/

Saying that the bar at the Empire Riverside hotel empire-riverside.de/de/… is popular choice (and rather busy)

On the website http://www.hamburg-restaurants.info/ already mentioned above there are also a few bars listed plus the review pages usually cover these too.
