From Frankfut to Paris and Rome

Hi everyone.

I'll be staying in Frankfurt for the World Cup this coming June.

I'll have some down time and would like to take some side trips to both Paris and Rome.

Anyone have any info how this can be done?

I'm looking more along the lines of train vs air.

Thanks

Paris may be easiest done by train as it is fairly close and there probably are few discount airline flights (you might check Germanwings from Stuttgart though, they may have just started service). Rome is quite a ways, and a discount airline flight would certainly be much quicker and cheaper. For this you probably will have to go to either Cologne or Stuttgart and Germanwings probably has flights. There are probably no such flights from Frankfurt itself.

Rome should be definitely too far away for a sidetrip by train. As far as I know, some budget airlines operate an airport near Rome from Frankfurt-Hahn (which by any chance is not near Frankfurt at all, but a 1 1/2 hour-journey with an airport shuttle bus away). You might want to check www.skyways.de for information on budget flights. The website is German only, but you should be able to get the information you want anyway.

Paris can be reached by train, but as Charles de Gaulle and Rhein-Main are two major airport hubs in Europe, wou might be able to get cheap flights, too. For train tickets and travelling times check www.bahn.de (including an English version of their website).

Great, thanks for your help.

So it seems the only way to Rome is through air.

Now the trip to Paris, any train or rail I should look into?

I know there are different ones going to Paris but I don't know if one is better then the other.

Thanks again.

Train schedules are at http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en

From: Frankfurt Hbf To: Paris

To ride the fast trains you would go to Bruxelles [Brussels] or Köln [Cologne] and connect to the Thalys trains which arrive at Paris-Nord station. The direct EC train arrives at Paris-Est station.

Do you know if it is possible to go directly to Paris from Gelsenkirchen?

Thanks

DB timetable

http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en

From: Gelsenkirchen

To: Paris

But keep in mind that the French and Italians also take part in the World Cup, i.e. their fans will be - depending on the dates - also using the trains and planes between Germany and their countries.

As I stated earlier, I would like to go to Paris directly from Gelsenkirchen.

It was suggested in another forum that my best bet would be to take a train from Gelsenkirchen to Cologne and then from Cologne

catch a train to Paris.

As long as I can go directly from Gelsenkirchen to Paris, I really don't want to catch another train to Cologne.

There is no need to rely on "I heard on another forum that..." kind of information. On www.bahn.de you will find all information on schedules from almost all European towns to almost all Europena towns. Then you can decide which connection suits you best. But to my knowledge there is no direct train connection from Gelsenkirchen to Paris.
