Car hire in Frankfurt, returning in Munich - romantic road

Hello everyone,

We are traveling to Germany next year, late June through mid July.

We will be staying in Bacharach the night before the romantic road, and wanted to pick our car up on the way to Rothenburg ob der Tauber at the Frankfurt airport. We then want to continue to Reutte, Austria the next day (spending the night there), see the King's castles, go to the Zugspitze and then continue to Munich to return the car. We will be staying in Munich for 3 more days.

Is a car the best option for us? Is it hard to pick up at the Frankfurt airport and return at the Munich airport? We are going to try the Zugspitze on the Austria side, is a car recommended for that? We would also like to hit a luge place.

Thanks in advance for all the help!

Though it is not hard to pick up a rental car at Frankfurt airport consider picking the car up at a city centre office rather than the airport or a train station. This will save you the airport/station surcharge.

It will generally not be a problem to return your car in Munich if you rent from one of the major companies (such as Sixt, Europcar, Hertz, Avis).

One option: Coming from Bacharach you have to change at Mainz anyway. The connecting train to the airport from Mainz will also take you straight to the stop Hauptwache (Europcar city office) or Konstablerwache (Sixt).

I'll let others comment on the route itself and the feasibilty of doing this by car.

Just a word of warning: Use the search function on these forums to see what experiences people have had with any company you may consider renting from. Most have mixed reviews, with the exception of Thrifty and Dollar in Franfurt, which are affiliated. Reviews for these two have been overwhelmingly negative. But don't take my word for it; do your own checking.

For the Austrian side of the Zugspitze, you really need a car to get to Lermoos.

Here is a suggestion: Pick up the car in Frankfurt (following Apfelweinand john d.v.'s suggestions. Drive it to Fuessen, via Rothenburg. I believe the Tegelberg near Fuessen has a luge. Drive from Fuessen past Lermoos to the the Zugspitze cable car. Then drive Garmisch - Munich. If you want to drop the car at the airport, take the A-99 Munich by-pass autobahn .

Just got back from Garmish--you will definitely need a car for the Austrian side of the Zugspitz, but if you want to stay on the German side, no worries. And whatever you do, avoid Dollar/Thrifty (called Rent A Terstappen) in Germany--we just got ripped off by them.
