scenic, inexpensive train or bus to Amsterdam?

We are looking to go from Hanover to Amsterdam the middle of April. We will be needing to travel in Germany, Netherlands, Belgium for 11 days out of a 15 day period. We were thinking it would be better to do point-to-point rather than a pass, but now we're having 2nd thoughts. We''ll be going from Berlin to Ostee-Wustrow to Hamburg to Hanover to Amsterdam (to surrounding areas), to Brugge, to Brussels. What would be the most economical thing and is it best if we have our itinerary lined up - to go ahead and book it now? thank you for your help!

http://www.eurail.com/ will give you details of cost of a euro train pass. As for booking now, that will depend on if you are willing to take pot luck with accomodation. We are planning a trip to southern germany later this year, we have chosen hotels based on TA recommendations, many of these hotels were already nearly full, I must add though we are going in August so it will be their busiest period. Hope this has been of some help, have a lovely trip.

I think you will find that Eurail passes are not available if you are from outside EU. Have you checked the prices on the railway sites? http://www.bahn.de/i/view/USA/en/index.shtml for for trains in or from Germany. www.nshispeed.nl for Netherlands and into Belgium.

You might still get some cheap tickets but as these go on sale 92 days in advance many be sold already. They are a lot cheaper than the standard fare but are only valid for the train booked

If your dates to be in Amsterdam are around the 30th April then the city is pretty much fully booked. The is due to Queen's day and the abdication of Beatrix, they expect 2.5 million people for it!

Hannover to Amsterdam is a ticket you should buy in advance.

DB timetable

http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en

Start: Hannover Hbf

Destination: Amsterdam Centraal

All other tickets you can buy on spot.

For the trips Berlin - Ostseebad Wustrow - Hamburg - Hannover the most econimical is to use the offers for regional trains.

bahn.de/i/…regionalangebote-uebersicht.shtml

Start: Berlin Hbf

Destination: Wustrow Mitte, Wustrow (Kreis Nordvorpommern)

(or to see more prices just to the closest train station)

Destination: Ribnitz-Damgarten West

Destination: Hamburg Hbf

Destination: Hannover Hbf

and select as means of transport "only local transport".

For Berlin to Ostseebad Wustrow use for the train part (till Ribnitz-Damgarten West ) a Schönes-Wochenende-Ticket (Sa or Su - EUR 42) or a Quer-durchs-Land-Ticket (Mo-Fr past 9am - EUR 50 for 2 persons). Schönes-Wochende-Ticket covers additionally all local public transport in Berlin. The buses from Ribnitz-Damgarten West to Ostseebad Wustrow are however not covered by either ticket.

For Ostseebad Wustrow to Hamburg use a Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Ticket (a Länder-Ticket). EUR 26 for 2 persons. The bus Wustrow - Ribnitz-Damgarten West is again not included. But all local public transport inside Hamburg is. This price option won't show up with the DB timetable.

From Hamburg to Hannover use a Niedersachsen-Ticket (another Länder-Ticket). EUR 26 for 2 persons. Covers all local public transport inside Hamburg and Hannover. This price option won't show up with the DB timetable.
