How to spend the day when docked at Warnemunde?

We are on a cruise in June and will be docking at Warnemunde. I just found out from that Berlin is a good 3 hours away. I would rather spend the time seeing things then traveling 6 hours on a train.

I am thinking of going to Rostock, taking the Mollie train in Bad Doberan and a river cruise on the Warnow back to Warnemunde.

Can anyone give me some advise on timing, fare, and how best to do this?

From Warnemünde to Kühlungsborn, the end station of the Molli, via Rostock you need tickets for 6 zones.

Day ticket is EUR 10,30

Mini group (3-5 persons) day ticket is EUR 30,90.

Boat Rostock Stadthafen to Warnemünde-Passagierkai is EUR 8,00.

I think yours is a very wise plan. We skipped the Berlin trip, too. Took the train to Luebeck for the day and enjoyed it immensly. Came home much earlier than the Berlin folks, and we definiteky were less worn out.

Hi,

another alternative would be to go to Rostock and then take a train to Stralsund. It will take about 1.5 hours with one change (Rostock). Price is 26 Euro for up to 5 people (Mecklenburg Vorpommern ticket).

Stralsund is a stunning town, UNESCO heritage protected, with hanseatic routes going back many centuries. It has been completely regenerated in the last 20 years. The centre is walkable, it has a fantastic little harbour and 2 aquatic museums, one on of them dedicated to the unique world of the baltic and nordic seas. http://www.ozeaneum.de/index.php?id=1&L=1

Apparently they are just showing Europe's biggest heart at the moment (that of a whale).

Honestly, you can't go wrong with a day trip to Stralsund. Loveley town centre, UNESCO heritage, great harbour and museums and very good food.

Alternatively, you might want to consider Schwerin, the capital of Mecklenburg Vorpommern with it's beautiful castle: www.schloss-schwerin.de/schwerin/schwerin.htm

Bad Doberan is nice too but Stralsund would be my first recommendation. Any questions, let me know,

G

Thanks to both of you for the suggestions. I will definitely check the links and suggestions. We have 6 in our party. So I guess we will get the group fare plus a single? We have a couple more months to plan.

Will you be on the Celebrity cruise leaving June 2 from Amsterdam? We'll also be docking in Warnemunde and do not wish to go to Berlin.

Hi, we will be on Azamara Journey. And we are definitely not going to spend the few hours we have there on a train ride to Berlin.

Hi, Does anyone having been on this or a similar Baltic cruise have an opinion as to whether it is necessary to always take a guided tour in every city? I realize that it's probably true of St. Petersburg, but I was curious about the other ports. For example, is it difficult to get from the dock to the downtown area?

We've been advised not to go to Berlin either so this posting is most useful. We are doing the Baltic Capitals out of Harwich on the Celebrity Constellation on 13th June and have been advised by a friend that has done the Baltic Capitals before that the only one you really need to do the guided tour of is St Petersburg, basically because of the visa situation etc., as all the others are either walkable from the docking point i.e. Oslo or have good cheap shuttle buses when you get of the ship. She is sending me an e-mail of her advise for each port. I will post anything else she passes on that I feel may be useful as some of the tour prices are unbelievable

to Wiggins and Beryl: Check the St. Petersburg forum for all the advice you need for private tours (not cruise ship ones) for St. Petersburg. We toured with Alla, but there are other private tour companies in St. P. who are also excellent and provide the needed papers to get off the ship. they are more personal, abd much better value in smaller groups.

I walked off the ship at Copenhagen and found it very easy to stroll to every sight that one would want to see. There was a great pedestrian path one could follow all over to every main point of interest. Maps were available at the disembarkation point. Of course, it depends on where one docks. We were on a smaller ship, the Oceania Regatta. Post Copenhagen for more info.

Same for Amsterdam...

If you will be stopping at Zeebrugge for Bruges, get a taxi to share (pricy) or do take a bus provided by the ship for Bruges "on your own". The docks are quite distant from Bruges, in a container port. You don't need to do this charming town in a large group tour; in fact, that would distrct from the experience. Do take a little canal boat excursion.

Post Bruges for more info on what to see.

Have a great voyage; I loved all the Northern Europe ports!

I have read these wonderful suggestions. What should be the deciding factor whether I spend the day going to Lubeck or to Stralsund? I will be in Warnemunde with the Princess cruise leaving Copenhagen on July 5.

Anyone else out there on this cruise?
