winter driving in Italy

We are planning a trip to Bologna, Venice, and Tuscany in Dec. (17 Dec- 20 Dec). We fly into Bologna and out of Milan. Any tips on driving in this area in Dec.? Are chains required? Would there most likely be snow and do they have the roads snow plowed regularly if there is snow?

You might get better responses in the Italy forums... but barring freak weather, you will have to deal with rain, not snow, at least not the kind of snow that would require plowing.

This is the forum for Aachen in Germany.

It is very unlikely that a rental car would be cheaper than Trenitalia.

How on earth could a rental car be cheaper than local trains?

I usually prefer trains too.

But depending on the number or person in a family or group, it might be worthwhile renting a car rarther then paying something like 4 tickets, that is, four times the cost of a trip for a group of 4 people.
