1 day in Dusseldorf, 1 day in Aachen

Hi everyone!

I'm flying to a friend's wedding in Aachen at the end of June. I only have 2 free days to explore. I arrive to Dusseldorf on Thursday morning, so I was thinking to spend 1 day in Dusseldorf and then 1 day in Aachen. My questions are:

1. How far is the train station from Dusseldorf International airport from which I could get to Aachen HBF? Can I easily get there from the airport?

2. I read that people advise to buy train tickets in advance. Do they get more expensive closer to the departure date? Is there a chance that the tickets to Aachen will be sold out when I buy them on the day of departure? What's the good place to buy them?

3. Any recommendations on what to see in one day in both of these places? I would like to walk around the city. I was looking for some walking guide maps (free if possible) but didn't really find anything yet.

I would really appreciate any info. Thanks.

you can use the train direct from Düsseldorf Airport train station (Düsseldorf Flughafen). Attention, ther are two train stations at Düsseldorf Airport, "Düsseldorf Flughafen" and "Düsseldorf Flughafen Terminal". You must use the station "Düsseldorf Flughafen". This station is connectet with the airport by a suspended monorail. The other station "Düsseldorf Flughafen Terminal" is under the airport Terminal. There is no need to book the tickets in advance. There are ticket machines at the station and they are also in english language. But you can also book the tickets in advance over the internet if you want ( http://www.bahn.de/i/view/USA/en/index.shtml ).

From the airport station you can use the RE1 (Regionalexpress 1 or NRW Express) directly to Aachen. The price for the one way trip to Aachen begins at 20.00 € p.P.

In Düsseldorf you can explore the old town (Altstadt), known to be the "longest bar in the world", because there is a high density of pubs in the old town.

The Rhine Tower (Fernsehturm) with the largest digital clock in the world.

The Rhine River boardwalk.

Benrath castle.

Aachen is famous for its cathedral (Aachener Dom). There is also a famous cathedral in Cologne.

I hope this informations will help you a little bit.

Aachen is a lovely city and you simply must visit the Dom - it is stunning! And the Rathaus (town hall) built on the site/foundations of Charlememagne's palace.
