Sunday, 24 November commemorating the dead

Myself and my husband are coming to Dusseldorf for the Christmas markets, at the end of November. I understand that the markets will be shut on Sunday 24 November for the commemorating of the dead? Will all restaurants, bars etc also be shut for the day. Been to Dusseldorf many times and really love the place, but never been for the markets before, sure we will find something to do, such a friendly place with friendly people, but thought it best to ask in case we have to sort out food & drink in advance for the day. thank you.

That's the Sunday before 1st Advent. Most Christmas markets won't even have started. Traditionally there is no Christmas decoration before "Totensonntag", but things have changed in the last years.

Restaurants will be open but there will be no public music or dancing in clubs.

Actually, folks will still have fun, eat and drink, but the Christmas Markets are closed. There are several other official holidays this time of year, but only that one closes the Christmas Market ( for an obvioous reason) and it is the most serious. There will be no music or entertainment or shows that day at any pubs or restaurants or concerts but otherwise life goes on.

Thank you so much for your reply .I got the information from the duesseldorf-tourismus.de/en/… which states :-

When: 21 November to 23 December 2013

Where: Düsseldorf city centre

Opening times: 22 November to 23 December 2012, daily from 11.00 a.m. to 8.00 p.m. (Sundays to Thursdays) and to 9.00 p.m. (Fridays and Saturdays). Closed on Sunday, 25 November (Sunday commemorating the dead)

I presumed they meant 24th as 25th is the Monday,so I was assuming they would be open on the Friday & Saturday.

I do hope so.

They start on the 22nd already? That surprises me.

The Christmas Market will definitely be closed on that Sunday, but you will have no problem to find a restaurant. Spend the day sightseeing or at museums. Life won't come to a standstill.

As to the list above, only All Saints, National Day of Mourning and Sunday of the Dead are official holidays. All others are just semi-official church holidays.

I know two protestant churches in Düsseldorf which have services.
