Dusseldorf to Mainz

We are planning a trip for Oct 2014 that arrives in Dusseldorf and would like to take the Köln-Düsseldorfer company cruise down to Mainz prior to starting a Gate 1 tour. Any information on transportation, cost, and places to stop and see would be appreciated. Our arrival date is not set so we have the ability to stay overnight at a location during the cruise if the scenic location is a "must see". Thanks.

KD does round trips in D'dorf but not between Cologne and D'dorf, as far as I know. Cologne to Mainz with KD takes a LOT of time. The 9:30 am boat from Cologne terminates in Linz about 5.5 hours later, but that's about as far as you can go in one day (Linz is a fine place to visit and to spend the night.) The next morning, the 9:30 am boat reaches Mainz at 20:30.

While much of the route between Cologne and Mainz is very scenic, much of it is also relatively uninspiring. I suggest cruising all or part of the most scenic section between Bingen in the south and Boppard in the north.

There's really so much to see and do between D'dorf and Mainz that you ought to be making your own choices based on your own interests. But basically, this trip should be done by train, and you can add on a 1-way sightseeing cruise (travel from south to north to save time as the current is strong.) For example, on Day 1, you might make some stops as you travel south by train, then continue to Boppard for the night. On the morning of Day 2, take the train to Bingen, then cruise north back to Boppard (2 hrs, 20 min.) or Braubach (2 hrs., 50 min., Marksburg Castle) then continue south to Mainz by train.

With 2 days, here are a few towns you might visit, depending on your interests, and depending on whether the tour you are taking includes these places:

Cologne

Linz am Rhein

Braubach (Marksburg Castle - www.marksburg.de )

St. Goar (Rheinfels Castle)

Boppard, Oberwesel, Bacharach (nice old-world towns)

Rüdesheim (tourist-heavy)

Mainz

To keep train costs minimal... travel between all the towns above (except Cologne) is possible on this daypass:

The trip from D'dorf to Cologne and onward to Boppard and the other towns can be done on Sat or Sun with the Happy Weekend ticket (daypass for Sat or Sun):
