Rhine Touring Hiliday

Next summer we are hoping to do a Rhine 'road trip' starting from Rotterdam and following the river as far down as we can. There seems to be a lot of things to do and see, any advice on picking out the gems would be gratefully received. We like vineyard country, also cars and motorcycles, history and archeology. Also picturesque towns and interesting architecture. We have never been to Germany before. We would ideally like a week in hotels and then a cottage as a base for the second week. Anytime July, August, September would suit. Thanks in advance.

You're traveling much more widely than just within the Rhineland-Palatinate area (where your post is listed) but within R-P, the picturesque old Rhine towns would surely include Linz am Rhein, Oberwesel, and Bacharach. Koblenz to Mainz is one gigantic vineyard - stop in Boppard, Bacharach, and Assmannshausen to sample (this is best done by train on account of strict German DUI laws and common sense practice.)

HISTORY along the Rhine: check into the Remagen Peace Museum, Braubach's Marksburg Castle, Rheinfels Castle in St. Goar, and the Romanesque cathedrals in Mainz, Worms, and Speyer.

Mainz is a particularly good spot to hunt down the Romans. A Roman Theater was discovered there and recently unearthed:

There are several places in Mainz where ancient Rome is in evidence:
