Berlin to Magdeburg by bike

We would like to bike ride from Berlin to Magdeburg in August. Is this possible on a bike path? If so how far? Any book available to assist in this adventure. Thank you in advance.

Biking from Berlin to Magdeburg is certainly possible. The German bike route network is very good and you can follow designated, signed/marked routes the entire way. You say bike "path", so I just wanted to clarify that not all of the routes are "paths", completely separated from vehicular or other traffic. There are times when you'll share the route with cars, farm equipment, pedestrians, etc. That said, most routes are separated from cars whenever possible and are chosen because of their bike friendliness.

There are a couple of good German bike route websites you might want to check out:

- ADFC (the national cycling association) http://www.adfc.de/ It's in German, so may want to use a browser translator if you don't speak German. There are links to English info within the site, but the information is much more limited. ADFC should have everything that you need to plan your route: paper map info, route planning, GPS info, where to stay, etc.

- Radnetz Deutschland (this covers the major, "national" cycling routes). There's an english version on their site. http://www.radnetz-deutschland.de/ This is a good site to take a look at the larger national bike route system.

In general, there are many, many bike routes out there and probably more ways to get from Berlin to Magdeburg by bike than you care to explore. But a quick look at Radnetz and you'll see that you could take national bike route 3 to national bike route 10. You can then go to ADFC and plan exactly what you'd like to do. (i.e. which maps you'd like to buy for your route, etc.)

Hope that helps! Have fun!

Hi, to answer your question slighly more precicely:

From Berlin, follow the Havelland-Radweg (Havelland cycle way) to Havelberg where you meet the Elberadweg (Elbe rive cycle path). Now up the Elbe river on its cycle path to Magdeburg. Here you are.

Alternatively, you take either the Berlin-Leipzig-Cycle path or the R1-cycle-way, both to Wittenberg. From here you use the Elbe river cycle path downstream to Magdeburg.

Esterbauer publishing house sells all the guidebooks (incl. maps) that you would need.

Enjoy it,
