spain trip report.

hi all.

we just got back from our summer holidays in spain.although we had some major problems fortunatelly we had a great time.

we stayed for 3 nights in madrid , for 12 nights in benidorm and again for 2 nights in madrid before we fly home.

in madrid we stayed in westin palace-beautiful grand hotel but rooms are completely dated.

the city is very beautiful!we loved it!large plazas, parks, green everywhere!superb buildings!

when we arrived we found out that our luggages where not...arrived!(we were flying with swiss international-terrible company i will never use it again).when we went to the ''lost and found'' the staff there said to us not to worry cause such things happen very often in barajas airport!we were furious!there were hundreds of people there who also lost their luggages and there was panic and furstration everywhere.

so the first day we were extremelly angry and nervous to have a good time!we didn't have anything to wear!

fortunatelly the hotel gave us lots of things like toothbruses, slippers etc and the concierge promised us that he'll do the best to find our luggages.

at that day we went for a drink in the afternoon to calm our nerves in the garden of ritz hotel and had dinner in the room.so our first day was completelly ruined and did nothing.

next morning with our luggages still missing after breakfast we went to prado museum(just fantastic-we felt very proud to see dominicos theotokopoulos paintings(el greco)-and for a walk to botanical garden.

we returned to the hotel late in the afternoon and our luggages still missing.

after an hours sleep and while we were about to leave for the airport to see what is happening with our luggages the bell door rung and there they were!we felt so much happy!the concierge did a wonderful job! we went for dinner at the ritz to celebrate!!!(the food was nothing special though).next day went to the royal palace, plaza mayor(we wanted to drink a coffee there but everywhere we looked it was so dirty so we desided to go elsewhere)and plaza de oriente where we had coffee with astonishing views of the palace.after that we went to plaza sol and for some shopping to el corte ingles(huge and great sales!).in the evening we had dinner at hyatt villa magna-great food.

the 4th day we went to benidorm for 12 nights.there we stayed at sheraton real de faula spa and golf resort.fantastic architecture but not very well run.

there we had great time(fortunatelly our luggages this time came along with us!)

we rented a car and we visited most of the area...altea, guadalest, alicante etc.fortunatelly the hotel was not in benidorm which is only good for shopping in some great outlet stores and for nothing more.

espacially guadalest is a must!so charming!

close to our hotel there were some thematic parks-mundomar and terra natura.very well organized and worth a visit.

after our 12 nights stay in benidorm we went to madrid or one day/night or at least that was our original plans! after a nice stay in this remarkable city (this time we visited thyssen museum and had dinner in ricolletos st.-very charming) we went to the airport to catch our flight back home (again with swiss international)but after check-in they announced that the flight is cancelled due to tecnical reasons!after 3 hours in the airport trying to solve out with the airlines staff what shall we do(very rude staff by the way) we went again back to our hotel(the westin palace )for one more night in madrid!this time we went for dinner in plaza de oriente and even very nervous with our cancelled flight we had a marvellous time.

generally we liked spain a lot.the only complain we had was that communication was rather difficult cause very few people spoke english and even fewer french.definatelly we will visit this wonderful country in the near future.

thanks everyone who contributed with very useful advices about our trip.

Hi Tellis,

I remember some of your questions before your trip. Thanks so much for your report back. Sorry about that luggage situation but glad you got it back before Benidorm. The only silver lining for other travellers if that we know that Iberia isn't the only airline that misplaces its customers' luggage.

It certainly sounds like you saw Madrid and ate there in style...the Ritz, etc. Also, not surprising that the Westin furniture seemed dated since the furniture in most Spanish homes looks firmly placed in the 19th century. But isn't the stained glass ceiling in the Rotunda wonderful?

I am surprised about your comment about problem with English since Benidorm is known to be one of Britain's largest cities, but maybe the Brits weren't staying at the Sheraton. Oh, sorry, you said it wasn't in Benidorm proper.

Once, again, thanks for a great report. People who respond to queries always appreciate knowing how trips work out.

hi holakjs!

the hotel in costa blanca is outside the city of benidorm.you need a car to get to the city.

well, in madrid most people spoke english well but in sheraton in benidorm the staff didn't.only the receptionists and 2 or 3 supervisors.

benidorm city is full of british people and with everything that comes with them!maybe in clubs and discos the staff there speak english but we avoided such places like hell!

we are full of nice memories to keep us going!

thanks for your reply.
