Spanish non-chavvy holiday resorts

My parents and I are planning a holiday together - we are all grown ups, my father is retired and we would just like a couple of weeks in the sun by the beach with nice food. I would appreciate some suggestions of resorts in Spain.

Due to where my parents live, they can only fly direct to Barcelona, Alicante, Malaga or Jerez.

The only must haves are a beach, a little bit of life (shops and restaurants) and (relative) freedom from chavs. I appreciate that many holiday resorts in Spain are likely to suffer a little from the 'Brits on tour' syndrome, but I would like to avoid this. I am going on a holiday to another country, hence I would like to experience Spain rather than Bognor Regis (no offence to anyone who is from Bognor Regis).

Thanks in advance

most of spain is chav-free (whatever a chav is)

if you want to avoid british-taken places, just avoid the usual suspects on your country package deals.

for instance instead of lloret de mar you can head to tossa de mar (next town) and you have a totally different vive. or to begur, l'estartit... or to castelldefels, sitges, vilanova i la geltru heading south from barcelona. even next to salou you have cambrils that is quite nice and a favorite holiday place of many spanish families. all this only near barcelona, in most beach towns there is not 'english breakfast' on offer. i can't speak about other areas of spain but i figure its the same.

Hi!

I'm biased to Vilanova i la Geltrú as I was born there, I still have close relatives and friends living there and is where I spend most of my summer weekends. There are a couple of very good beaches, a beautiful seaside promenade and a typical Catalan rambla (main street to shop and to "see and be seen" while sipping a beer, a glass of wine or a coffe in one of the many terraces), a great food market, a couple of museums... and many good (and reasonably priced) restaurants serving local food (if you like fish/seafood you will be in heaven). There are a few ethnic restaurants were we locals go when we fancy something different but I can't remember any place advertising "English breakfast" ;-)

Ah, all this is just 40 min by train from Barcelona, and 10 minutes from Sitges (a very pretty town and, even more touristy, still well worth a visit too)

Hopefully others will write about other beautiful destinations. As the poster above said, most of Spain beach towns are "authentic" and chavvy-free!
