Train Travel

We plan to travel around Spain & Portugal by train tourist class. We will have a large suitcase & carry on bags. Are we able to watch our suitcases throughout the journey or are suitcases booked? I understand that seats are assigned. How safe is it to travel by train?

Train travel is very safe in both countries, luggage is stored at the end of each carriage.

The train service Madrid to Lisbon is an overnight journey.

There is no 'booking' of luggage. Storage at the end of carriage, modest sized bags on shelving above your seat or perhaps at your feet.

'safe' - in what sense or concern?

Train travel is very safe. However be careful at the train stations because there may be pickpockets.

Re: #4

I have not seen a problem or a commotion on a train in thirty some years down to those issues.

On the train platform, yes - beware pickpockets in crowded tourist frequented places anywhere (in the world). Violent theft is rare per capita in Spain compared to all other 'westernised societies' including your own.
