Spain and Portugal itinerary

My best friend and I are in the beginnings of planning our trip to Spain and Portugal in March! We will be a total of 14 possibly 15 days in country. Neither of us have been to Europe and I fear we are over ambitious in our lists of places to go!

Our plan (not set in stone) is to fly into Barcelona and fly home from Lisbon. In my mind our trip looks something like this: 4 days in Barcelona, overnight train to Granada for 2 days, bus to Seville for 2 days, AVE train to Madrid for 2 days, then overnight train to Lisbon for the last 4 days. In Lisbon I would love to make it to Cascais and or Faro.

Alternately, we could take a bus from Seville to Faro and skip Madrid. OR skip Seville have more time in Madrid or Portugal.

I would really like to see the Picasso museum, the Reina Sofia, otherwise I like wandering the streets more than museums. Alhambra is a must. I can't imagine going to Spain and not seeing Alhambra.

Would appreciate any thoughts or pieces of advice!

Its 7 months away but I am SOOOOOO excited!

Do not skip Madrid! Just read the top questions in the Madrid forum for the large number of places you can visit.

So in your opinion Madrid over Seville? Both? Trust me, I would love to see Spain in it's entirety, just worried about being too rushed! Thanks for the info!

Next question....Is it fairly easy to find a decent hotel when going from city to city, or is it recommended to pre-book? With so many stops on our trip, I'd like to only pre-book our Barcelona and Lisbon stays (beginning and end). Is March a very high tourist time?

March is quiet and you do not need to prebook hotels.

In 2013 Easter is in March. If you are travelling over Easter book your hotels. I use and recommend www.booking.com
