Visiting Spain

Thinking about visiting Spain next September for eight or nine days. We are thinking about renting a car and sightseeing probably central to southern Spain. Looking for info re: where to arrive so that we can use the same airport to return to the States, places to visit, and any other suggestions that will help in planning.

Consider arriving and departing at Madrid. Also consider using public transport like the very nice fast train AVE from Madrid down to Seville. It will be very warm and pleasant at that time of the year especially in first half. Then maybe rent a car for a one way drop off at somewhere like Malaga and take the fast train back to Madrid.

You could fly out of Malaga but it wd involve a connecting flight eg via Frankfurt. That may work out cheaper though, airlines often "throw" in the European leg because they are keen to get you on their plane across the Atlantic so Lufthansa and partners often have good deals.

8 or 9 days isn't all that long especially if you want to include the "big three" in Andalucia (Granada, Seville, Cordoba) as well as Madrid and Toledo, possiblty Segovia etc.

Bill:

Read Buying Renfe Tickets Online. They give large discounts for those who buy 62 days in advance. The high speed train in Spain is called the AVE and is one of the most pleasant experiences a tourist can have in Spain, especially Americans, because the US does not have anything like it.

I would try to do 11 days at least. A great first time trip to Spain would be to fly into Madrid, take the high speed train to Seville for 4 nights, Granada for two nights, Malaga for one or two, and then the high speed train back to Madrid for 3 or 4 nights. You can do a daytrip to Cordoba from Seville and a daytrip to Toledo or Avila from Madrid. Cadiz would also be great that time of year.
