How major of a problem is crime for tourists while traveling through southern Spain?

you should pay attention in cities, as you would do in any other city. Violent crimes against you are very rare in spain, however car breaking or pickpocketing could be an issue.

If you have a rental car, do not leave your car with any belongings visible and keep everything in the trunk of the car. This will prevent break-ins.

There is little violent crime in Spain.

When walking in cities, stay on main streets at night, where there are plenty of people around. If you find yourself on a street alone, go to one with people. There is safety in numbers.

Keep valuables safe when using buses because there may be pickpockets.
